About Cameo

I spent most of my school years having to, essentially, tutor myself in the subjects I struggled in. Through that work, I learned many tips and tools that I believe help students understand their work outside of the typical rules of teaching. My philosophy when it comes to teaching or tutoring is to meet my students where they are at and work with them to understand material their way, not just the "standard" way.

As someone who grew up having to navigate learning without help or tutoring, I enjoy sharing the tools that I've learned with others. School can be difficult for even the best of students and I enjoy being able to help ease that burden for students.

I started out tutoring very naturally. My younger siblings would come home with work that they had in school that they didn't understand and I would help them. When they would have their friends over to do homework, I would also help them and it grew from there. I helped both of my siblings through their SAT as well as any AP classes they had in high school. I continued this when I went to college by mentoring and tutoring freshman or underclassmen with the subjects that they were struggling in.

I have no formal teaching education or training. All of my experience comes from tutoring my two younger siblings and their school friends growing up as well as mentoring various freshmen while I was in college.

I usually start off by having the student provide me with a few examples of assignments or work that they are struggling with and ask them to explain what about the work confuses them. From there, I have an understanding of what broad subjects or concepts they struggle with and put together a lesson plan based on those issues. I offered the student the option of following the lesson plan or simply getting help with specific work in class. My tutoring is very much student-led which means that I help them where they want help the most.

Through my siblings, I have worked with grades five through 12. I have also, through my mentoring in college, helped college freshman and sophomore's.

My number one suggestion to students is to make sure that the tutor that you have matches the way you like to be taught. The one downside of standardized teaching in schools today is that there are some students who learn better in non-standard settings such as interactive learning and it's important that your tutor works with you on this.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What are my goals for tutoring? Is it just help with specific exams or assignments or is there a broad topic or concept that I'm struggling with?

2. Is my teacher willing to work with me on my tutoring or do they have a rigid lesson plan for me to follow? Which of those teaching styles works for me?

My base pricing is at $20 per hour. This covers standard subjects such as English, math, science, etc. as well as optional assignments and work that my students can complete in between sessions. Price increases are for specialized help such as SAT/ACT practice, AP/honors courses or final exam prep. All of these sessions are $35/session.
