About Ariel

Trained as a trauma-informed play therapist, Ariel has worked with students from 5-17 in a variety of capacities. Although she sees past diagnosis and has a holistic view of children and families, she has worked with students who have relationships with the diagnosis, including learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, Austism Spectrum, C-PTSD, OCD, schizophrenia, anxiety and depression. She is able to see the best and most brilliant qualities of young people, no matter how much they may be struggling.

She is able to adapt to the natural language of children, whether it is through play, art and music, writing and reading, dance and movement, technology and games, or talking and listening. She is trained as a Social Worker. Personally, she loves expressing herself through journaling, relationships, writing, storytelling and art.

Ariel is also fluent in Spanish and can incorporate multi-lingual learning. She has travelled and worked with kids in different countries, including Colombia, South Africa, Thailand, and the Dominican Republic.

Ariel began working with children as a teen at an after school center. Growing up in Brooklyn, in high school she tutored kids math. Her junior year Ariel experienced a challenging time with illness and received homeschooling for several months. It was through that process that she learned the importance and potential of quality 1:1 education.

Her work with children and young people has continued through receiving a Masters degree in Social Work. She is a licensed social worker currently in Boston. And is eager to learn more about the kinds of services you are looking for.

I love working with students, and I love when they get to experience a sense of mastery. This can be the demonstration of a skill they already have, or learning a new one. I love when young people feel like they can express themselves freely. I love being surprised by how brilliant, creative, insightful, and challenging young people can be. And I love being a witness and support on their journeys.

I started teaching art classes as a teenager. Then I loved teaching peers math in high school. I also taught competitive sailing as a sailing instructor and Assistant Sail Master at a YMCA for several summers. I continued my teaching skills in Colombia, where I taught English as a second language and worked as 5 teachers' mentor/English coach. I continue to teach and use education in the therapy space.

I like to first get to know their strengths and interests. It's important to first develop a relationship, and then work together in a collaborative way to create goals.

I have worked with students of all different ages (5-17) as well as developmental levels and experiences. Most recently the students I was working with were folks who have survived and thrived amidst substantial oppression and marginalization. I have also worked with students in an orphanage in a township in South Africa and students in Bogota, Colombia. Additionally, I have also extensively with folk in summer camp settings, after school programs, and schools in the Boston, Rhode Island and New York areas.

I would advice them to find someone they vibe with. Connection is important. I would hope the person they find balances relationship with challenge and high belief in the student.

Recently I've befriended a friend's 8 year old son. We've really been enjoying watching a tv show together called Steven Universe. Sometimes we sing together and he likes to be wrapped up like a burrito in a blanket. We've been creating lots of fond memories.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What their preferred style of learning is (you can find one you like on your own, but here is an example of a quiz to help you figure that out: (concealed information) )

2. If they have any tools that might help them; how they feel in their bodies and what their bodies might be communicating
