About Christine

I have been an English teacher for the past nine years as well as an instructional leader for other teachers. I have had a lot of experience helping students understand how to approach a text and specifically how to annotate a text to aid in reading comprehension. I'm kind, very patient and understand that everyone student learns at a different pace and that a teacher needs to adapt their style to the student's needs.

I enjoy teaching reading comprehension. Often students aren't explicitly taught how to look at the text as a whole and understand how each component part works together to create the author's message. I've found that teaching students this way of looking at texts allows them to find more success when they independently read. I also find grammar fascinating and love vocabulary. I love letting my students know that with strong vocabulary, you not only sound intelligent, but can make funnier jokes!

I am a certified teacher in English for grades K-12. I've worked with students as young as first graders all the way up through high school throughout the last 10 years. I was also a coach to other teachers to support them in improving their practice. I am currently in a Master's program studying to become a speech language pathologist.

About the lesson

First, obviously just getting to know the student as a person and understanding what their experience has been so far. Second, I try to get to know the student on an academic level, which might mean looking at writing samples or having them try out a few assignments to try to gauge specifically where they require the most help.

Think about if you'd like your tutor to just support with homework or projects or if you'd like them to prepare lessons for enrichment.

Find someone that you feel comfortable working with and can ask questions to.

Details

My hourly rate is $45-$55, depending on location as well as how much preparation is needed for the tutoring session. Before beginning, I do offer a free 20- 30 minute trial session at a library or cafe, so we can see if we'd be a good fit for each other.
