About Maxim

The classical world is not dead -- it should not cast aside like some spent torch. The Greeks and Romans have left us worlds of inquiry to inspire and guide us, from languages and philosophies, to architectural and technical achievements, to artistic masterworks, and to some of the greatest thinkers and leaders our planet has ever known. My mission, in addition to providing an uncompromising pursuit of excellence for my students, is to cultivate an appreciation and sense of wonder for the Ancients. Regardless of whether you continue to study for a day or a lifetime, I seek to pass the torch -- to impart the breath of life (θυμός) of a time passed to the next generation. I also teach English, writing, history, and general studies.

Eight years of Latin, five years of Ancient Greek (Attic / Homeric), one year of Ancient Egyptian, recognized nationally for outstanding achievement on the National Latin Exam and the National Greek Exam in every year and numerous levels of study, numerous school and classics department specific accolades.

About the lesson

I am completely flexible to the needs of the student, but typically our first session is about getting to know one another, assessing needs and skill areas, and figuring out how we can maximize value for you in future sessions. From there we can work on anything from translations and diction to study strategies and organization.

I know how to work well with students from many walks of life, as well as those with some learning disabilities. I myself am on the autism spectrum, and I know how difficult learning disabilities can be. I have worked with a wide variety of students with a wide variety of struggles, and I am happy to speak with you to ascertain whether I have the expertise for your specific needs.

My pricing system is simple -- $40/hr, with negotiable rates for long-term assignments. If you contact me to reschedule, please do so a day in advance. Otherwise, I reserve the option to charge $20 for a missed session fee.
