About Ethan

Some of my earliest experiences in teaching young people was in a youth church for roughly two years in my earlier twenties.  Since then, I have done infrequent ameteur teaching, sometimes in formal settings and often not.

Most of my recent education is autodidactic.  I'm not a classicist, but I have attempted to familiarize myself with the history of the ancient near east, the history of the US/UK (the last 300 yrs. especially), church history, literary/philosophical movements in the West, classic novels, English Romantic poetry, and theology.  By ongoing study of languages, I can read some Middle English, Koine Greek, and ancient Hebrew.

I want to find out about their personality, their goals, and their needs.  Some students may just need some support to pass a class, but even helping with this can be approached several ways.  For some students, I may need to work through their textbooks and homework with them; for others, I may set aside most of their assigned work to help develop their learning technique, epistemology, gifts, and general knowledge separately.  Some might need a combination of both.  I find it's a common trend with students in school that they don't know how to study or don't enjoy their subjects.  These are two areas I want to help them improve.  Identifying the peculiarities of each student's needs will help determine the method of approach.

Find out what their goals for you are.  Consider what their approach to human character is as a matter of principle, and ask if they read books older than one hundred years old on any regular basis.  The best way to study history and literature is always to read the original sources.  It's best to discover for yourself what someone said directly, rather than reading what someone said about what someone said.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
-What do you want to get out of school?  (Age differences will vareigate the answer.  Much younger students may not be prepared to consider this question.)

-Can the teacher you're approaching instill values and habits for your character that will help you in real life challenges?  (In other words, can they help you understand the significance of your school subjects in practical life?)

-Are there any habits for learning and studying that you haven't developed?  Or are there habits you have developed which are inhibiting you?  (Giving practical wisdom for your private study time is necessary because the teacher won't always be there to help you through a course.  The best teacher will teach you how to learn independently.)

This is highly negotiable with me according to a mutual agreement with the parents of the student.  I prefer a flat rate of $30/per hour of each session, but this is certainly adjustable.  I'm loath to turn away a student for pricing concerns; so I'm very willing to adapt my pricing model.
