About

Hi, I'm D (they/them/theirs). I'm a trans/non-binary educator and debate coach who recently earned a Master's degree in the History of Science from Oregon State University. After I graduated cum laude from Franklin and Marshall College with a Bachelor's degree in History and Religious Studies, I continued to pursue my passion for research and writing through graduate studies. While earning my MA, I developed my teaching and tutoring skills through the university classroom and fostered a love of learning in my students through engaging lectures, frequent class discussions, fun review sessions, and open office hours. I've learned that a relaxed and exploratory educational environment allows students to develop analytical skills which they can apply in their own writing, research, and classwork. All learning, research, and writing is a process and I strive to make my students comfortable with and excited about large projects like research papers. I excel in developing personalized strategies to meet a student's specific needs. More than anything, I aim to teach students how to continue improving and teaching themselves.

I specialize in History, Public Speaking, Speech and Debate, ESL, Writing, Proofreading, Editing, Grammar, and Research Skills. I have experience lecturing classrooms of over 50 students, directing smaller review and discussion sessions of 5-15 students, and tutoring students on a one-on-one basis.

Since 2009 I have also been a member of the National Speech and Debate Association. In high school, I competed in both speech and debate categories at national, state, regional, and invitational competitions. Since 2013, I have coached students at the high school level and served as a for-hire judge in various leagues around the country (including the NJFL, CFL, PSSDL, OMSSDL, NSDL). I also have experience with middle school speech and debate and collegiate speech and debate.

I encourage prospective students to schedule a brief, 10 minute online consultation session before committing to a lesson to discuss goals, learning style, and their personal timeline.

I love teaching students to enjoy the learning process. Since education is as much about the journey as it is about the destination, I am passionate about transforming my students into lifetime learners who know how to apply critical thinking skills throughout their career. I have been providing 1:1 tutoring for about a year and have almost three years of experience teaching in a variety of college settings.

While earning my MA, I gained valuable lecture and tutoring experience. I have experience lecturing classrooms of 50 students, directing smaller review and discussion sessions of 5-15 students, and tutoring students on a one-on-one basis.

I encourage prospective students to schedule a brief 10 minute consultation to discuss their goals, timeline, and lesson expectations. Depending on the subject, I often design a syllabus and cirriculum to fit the student's individual needs and educational deadlines. For longer term projects such as public speaking or speech and debate, I work with new students to determine their experience level, comfort with argument construction, and confidence with presenting their ideas. Since topics change on a monthly basis, the process for debaters is often unique from that of ESL, writing, history, or philosophy students.

I have worked with studetns ages 9+. Many of my public speaking students are in elementary and middle school. I have also worked with numerous high school students on english, history, philosophy, writing papers, and speech and debate. Usually, my college students are tackling large research projects, and many focus on religious studies and philosophy. Finally, I have assisted a number of graduate students on dissertations and thesis projects and worked with adult professionals on ESL.

I would encourage prospective students to consider what type of learning environment they are looking for. Do you want your tutoring lessons to run like a class, with a syllabus and clearly defined expectations/due dates? Or would you prefer an open and casual learning environment where we explore complex topics and develop skills of lifelong learning? Since I offer both styles of tutoring, students should ask themselves how they learn best.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you are looking for speech and debate help, consider whether your tutor and coach has competition experience. Are they familiar with multiple speech (Impromptu, Extemperanous speaking, Duo Interpretation, Humerous Interp, Oral Interp, Original Oratory, Declamation, etc.) or debate (Lincoln-douglas, Progressive policy LD, Public forum, Congressional, Parliamentrary, etc) categories? How successful have past students been at competitions?
