About Thomas

About:

Thomas is a German composer, orchestrator and songwriter who composes for film and television, as well as concert music and collaborative art. He is co-founder of the composer collective and sample library builders Green Light District, regularly working with his collaborators Marlon Lang and Dylan Love.

Thomas is based in Los Angeles, California and was raised in Munich, Germany and started his musical training at an early age, learning to play the piano, guitar and drums.

Thomas likes to teach music production with a focus on Logic Pro X and teaching how to create interesting sound/music textures and layers and how to utilise technology for the best effects for the world of visual media.

Experience:

He has worked with a wide range of people such as freelance film makers, directors, illustrators, musicians, and artists around the US, UK and Germany. He has worked with the American music producer Randall Dunn and the composer Jóhann Jóhannsson on the cult film Mandy. Additionally, he worked as the orchestration assistant on the film Mary Magdalene, for which Jóhann and Hildur Guðnadóttir wrote the soundtrack.

Whilst working as a composer, Thomas very much enjoys the collaborative process and working as a co-composer, score mixer, sample library creator, and orchestrator on a variety of projects, including his recent work with the film composer Kubilay Uner on Neutra - Survival Through Design in late 2019. In July 2020 he started working with the film&tv composer Ronit Kirchman in Los Angeles, California. His most recent orchestral work ‘Their Future Passage’ was recorded on the famous Newman Stage at 20th Century Fox in the heart of Hollywood with LA’s finest musicians in late August, 2020. He has also taught music production to various people as student teacher at Columbia College Chicago and taught lessons in the UK to film students at the Gloustershire University.

Education:

From 2010 until 2014 he trained in composition and sound engineering at the Deutsche Pop Musik Akademie in Munich. He studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, Wales, UK for his BMus (Hons) degree (2014-2018), under Joseph Davies and Owen Lloyd, specializing in composition and creative music technology. In September 2018 he joined the Music Composition for the Screen (MFA) program at Columbia College Chicago for which he has been awarded with an assistantship.

I love writing music to visual media, learning new techniques from project to project and to teach others these techniques to help create a new generation of composers and musicians that will define the sound of the industry in the near future.

Changing the game is a big part about this. Let's be creative together and create a new wave of music content creators that are inspiring to others and partake in projects that are new, unique and meaningful.

I started teaching when I studied classical composition at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, helping others with technology, particulary Logic Pro X. Later I worked as teaching assistant as part of my assistantship at Columbia College Chicago

I have taught multiple students in the past teaching music production, mainly using Logic Pro X and how to create interesting sound worlds by combining instruments, effects and unique processing techniques.

I have taught students at Columbia College Chicago and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

I have taught various nationalities which has really helped me assess the students' needs.

About the lesson

Usually, I like to assess at which stage the student is at to properly be able to teach them the skills they need and that are relevant to them.

I will ask them to bring projects or audio samples of what they have created using Logic Pro X and will then discuss further steps and how to help the student in the most efficient way.

I have worked with mainly college students on a undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Be passionate, be yourself and work hard every day.

Recently, my orchestral piece 'Their Future Passage' was recorded on the famouns Newman Scoring Stage at 20th Century Fox with LA's finest musicians.
