About Robert

Hi, I'm Rob Steadman of Uptown Drumming. I have been behind the Drum Kit for 20 years, 13 of those years as a professional touring a recording drummer. I have taught students of all ages and all abilities to great success. Whatever your goals, whether you delight in mastering this complex instrument, or whether you hope to be a professional yourself one day, I can help you get there. As a South African, I was raised on the drumbeats and rhythms of traditional Zulu and Xhosa folk music. Growing up in the UK, I received classical training in drum kit, chorus, and piano, and built a career as a professional drummer with the critically-acclaimed band Stornoway. I’ve played some of the world’s most renowned stages. With numerous critically-acclaimed albums, EPs, and singles under my belt, I’ve mastered all stages of recording and producing under the tutelage of some of the finest producers in the business. Now, as a New Yorker, I blend these very different approaches into a unique teaching methodology that emphasizes self-discipline and enjoyment while encouraging creative rule-breaking. I believe that this empowers my students to find their own musical voices inside and outside of the learning environment. I have extensive experience with students - from early learners (Pineapple Explorers Club, Little Maestros, Art Start) to Elementary School Children (Lead Music Teacher at Success Academy Charter Schools), to middle and high-schoolers (Teaching Artist, City-As-High School, a part of New York Edge and the Department of Education). This extensive teaching experience has given me a deep understanding of educational pedagogy, which I use to better serve my individual students. My students receive training in all styles of drumming and percussion as led by their interest and abilities, from hand instruments (African and South-American percussion) to full drum kit (Jazz, Rock, Folk, Funk), to electronic drumming (pads, Ableton Live), to production, mixing, and mastering. I take pride in educating myself in the very latest technologies that are out there for musicians and producers alike. Wherever my students want to go in their exploration of rhythm and production, I can take them there.

After many years on the road and in studios, I decided that I wanted to share my experience and skills with others.

I have received formal training on Drum Kit since the age of nine and have 16 years of professional experience touring and recording as a signed artist. I have 5+ years of teaching experience in a variety of educational settings.

About the lesson

I offer an initial phone consultation at no charge in order to ensure that we are a good fit. This allows me to get a sense of the student's areas of interest and proficiency level so that our first lesson can be productive and enjoyable!

I've worked with a diverse range of students in an equally diverse range of settings. From toddlers to adults, in homeless shelters and in formal school settings. Beginners and pros alike have been able to experience the joy of drumming and music-making through my instruction.

When you're going to the great effort of looking for quality instruction and deciding to spend money on it, an essential first step is to have a phone consultation with a teacher. Professional musicians and teachers can be accomplished in many ways, but there is a level of human connection that needs to exist for the fit to be right. My advice is to speak over the phone with whichever teacher you're interested in so that you get a chance to ask whatever questions you need to and to hear authentic answers from your potential provider.

Details

I offer in-home instruction at $60/hr throughout New York City in percussion and music production. If a student does not have a drum kit at home I arrange for us to meet in a fully-equipped, professional studio for an additional $30/hr. I also offer internet-based sessions at a rate of $48/hr for music production and for select percussion students whose needs align with this particular method of instruction.
