About Ed

I've studied with master method Drum teachers throughout the 1970s., Legendary Jazz Drummers, performed & toured throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico during the late 70s to the present day. During this time while living in NYC I taught drums privately to share what I've learned from my teachers along with the knowledge and experience i developed from my touring & performing career as a professional drummer.

I teach technique, reading drum music as well as understanding written music for other instruments as a parallel relation to written drum music and orchestrated parts to the drum set in different genres and styles of playing music in relation to the drum set. I focus on playing all the rudiments first on one surface then around the drum kit. Transcribing recorded music a student wants to learn and teaching them to play it professionally on the drum set all the while showing them how what they are hearing and playing look on music stave as written music. The student will then be learning to read music in a professional setting. I teach beginner to advanced drum students.

I've taught privately for over 25 years in NYC. I look forward to sharing my knowledge, experience, passion and love of music with any eager student that wants to have fun & joy in learning how to properly play and perform on a professional level on the drum set.

My style is Rock, RnB, funk, fusion and Jazz. with latin elements

I favor in my ow .playing : Jeff Porcaro, Steve Gadd, Steve Jordan, Steve Ferone and Bernard Purdie on the groove side. Jazz with Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, philly Joe Jones to name a few.

I began teaching in 1980 after returning from a full year on the road with HOI, I've been teaching privately since.

My students range in all age groups from 10 to 75.

I teach proper fulcrum, and ease of motion in playing the drum set, all the rudiments, reading beginner to advanced, I play side by side with all my students throughout the lesson in the first half of the 90 mins.

All my lessons are 90 mins long.

The 2nd half takes place on the drum set. If there are 2 we play together for some of that.

I ask every student to pick a song they want to learn, then I write out the song in drum music in front of them each week adding 12 to 16 bars or more depending on the students ability and show them what they are playing and how to play, read and count that.

After which eventually a full song is completed.

The student needs to enjoy the process. All of it. I make each lesson fun without judgment.

I'm there to grow and inspire each student with my own knowledge, experience and joy of being a professional musician and student myself of the instrument. Music teaches us we all never stop learning and growing when it comes to music.

I also play piano and can accompany any student as they play the drums on a keyboard if one is present.

I travel to each students home.

About the lesson

I first assess their level of aptitude for playing the instrument. I begin every lesson with playing the rudiments and other reading exercises along with every student. During with time I address and technique issues a student may have in simply striking the drum pad. I teach that the drummer must play not using his or her arms bit pivoting the wrist to strike the pad & drums. From there we move the the drum set. Playing in time and feel for the instrument using the technique played earlier in the lesson on the pad now moved to the drum kit. Understanding different styles of music and how to maturely play them with other people in a band setting.

Finally I as the student to bring in a song or piece of music they want to learn. I transcribe it for them from sound onto music paper and show them what that looks like musically and how to interpret that onto the drum set.

Prior in the lesson we work on leaning to read drum music and how it relates physically to the drum set in a professional musical setting with other musicians.

I goal is to play the instrument in an economic manner, meaning not over extending the body to play in an exhaustive manner in less the music dictates that action on the instrument. Playing music that the student enjoys because music is fun !!!

Learning to read music and play an instrument properly while growing the knowledge & joy of the experience of learning new things each week in a fun setting is essential.

Ed Bimonte (Eddie when I had the pleasure of being taught by him) is somewhat of a legend in my Bronx neighborhood that we both grew up in. He does not know it, and likely will read it here, but he changed my life in a very positive way. When i was just 10 years old my parents took me to see my older sister perform in her Junior High School music recital at I.S. 192, conducted by Richard Morris. At this time, my parents were on the verge of divorce, fighting constantly and I was a very sad child growing up. At this performance, there was a song performed where the drummer got to play a drum solo (spotlight and all). I watched Eddie play and do amazing things with a pair of sticks (he was VERY advanced for his age). As he played, I watched his parents watching him and saw how proud they both were. I thought to myself..."if I can do that, my parents would love each other again". So my goal was when I got to that school I would work hard to be the "star drummer" and get that spotlight to save my family. I eventually got to I.S. 192 and BECAME that drummer, spotlight and all. Needless to say, it did not save my parents marriage, but it saved me. While I was at I.S. 192 I wanted to learn how to read music and become a better musician. Mr. Morris recommended Eddie as a teacher, and before ya know it, I was traveling on the #6 train into Manhattan at 13 years old to take lessons at Eddie's apartment. At this point in my life the only drummer names I knew of were Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell and John Bonham. Within just a few lessons my posture, stick control and general "drumming vocabulary" had increased exponentially and I knew the names of Steve Gadd, Steve Jordan, Harvey Mason, Rick Marotta, Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Max Roach, Elvin Jones and countless others. Eddie was an amazing teacher and has a very relaxed, calm vibe about him that helped take the nervous edge off me and allowed me to grow as a drummer as well as a person and general music enthusiast. I HIGHLY recommend Ed Bimonte as a drum teacher and if you are lucky enough to be taught by this "cool groovy cat" you will not be disappointed.
