About Kristen

I deliver a student-focused lesson. A student’s learning style, expectations, and pace is the foundation a lesson is built on. I want the lesson to be exciting, thought-provoking and relevant for each person I work with.

I love the interaction of ideas, perspectives, and the total creative process.

I started teaching the day I learned to read and ran home to share it with my sister. I taught all my sisters to read. The first time I was asked to be "THE" teacher was when I was 15 or 16. I had been a girl scout and I was not one at the time, but I was asked if I would help out at the local Girl Scout Field Day, at Cedar Hill. I had earned many badges in outdoor skills so I was asked to teach orienteering. Well, I did not realize how big this event was. There were troops from several towns and I had to yell very loudly to be heard since each "class" I taught was comprised of several troops. I was hoarse by the end of the day.

I have been teaching ever since, one way or another.

I have been an artist all my life. In college, I studied watercolor under Carlton Plummer. I took a wide variety of classes in art, music, and literature at U Mass, Lowell, and Harvard Extension. Most of the art education has come through collaboration and volunteering. In high school, I took a summer school ceramics program and I was asked to assist in the classes, for example. I am also an avid reader and have read many books by artists and about artists, talking about lives, movements, and even "how to" books about technique.

I am constantly trying new things so my hands are never idle. I love researching and experimentation, but I feel the most powerful way to learn is to teach something. The act of teaching makes one examine what one is doing and look at whether there may be an easier way to do it. I have taught arts and crafts, music lessons, outdoor skills, cooking, literacy, and many more things for more than thirty years. When I worked in the school library I integrated the arts into so many projects I did in class. As an educator, I have taken over ten years worth of workshops and trainings regarding education. I have been a Certified Ed Tech III for The State of Maine for twelve years this February.

About the lesson

When I work one on one with someone, I like to have that first session establish a rapport. I need to find out what a student’s learning style is, what their expectations are and what their skill level is. I see learning as an adventure and part of successful learning is stretching beyond one’s comfort level, trying new things and needing several tries to accomplish your aim. People who only do things that they have already mastered are not learning things.

Along with the talking, I ask for some demonstrations. We will do some simple exercises to see how comfortable the task is. Tell me and show me where you are in your learning. What other interests do you have that intersect with this?

I encourage people to practice in between lessons and we will come up with a focus or exploration that they can work on and be shared for lesson number 2.
