About Mary

I am a K12 certified art educator with over a decade of experience teaching art to all ages. I am also a BFA artist and photographer! I offer group classes, private classes, workshops and events at my studio.

In my career I have earned a grant with the NJ Dodge foundation, wrote Art & Music lessons for the state of NJ with the NJ Symphony, I wrote the Middle school art curriculum for Paramus, NJ, I have also initiated and curated disctrict wide art shows for students K-12. In addition to these educational services I have been working and exhibiting my personal art work since 1996.

Everything! I love bringing the community to the arts via interactive art events. I also love bringing the arts to the community through art exhibits of both student and personal work.

My group classes end in an art show every 6 weeks!

After graduating art school I taught in an art school for elementary aged students and knew this would complete my artistic calling! I then returned to school to get K12 certified.

What makes me unique is that I am certified AND I am a working artist.

I earned a BFA in Illustration, triple minor in Drawing, Photography and Art History. I've been freelancing as a traditional illustrator and photographer since 1996. I returned to art school gradutating in 2001 with k12 Art Education certification allowing me to teach in public schools for just over a decade. Recently I have been teaching privately while continuing my photography career. I opened an Art studio in downtown Denville in 2018 and have continued to work with artists of all ages!

About the lesson

When I meet a brand new artist we start off with an email exchange, or conversation establishing their skill set. Beginner? Taken classes before? What would you like to begin/focus on? (Painting, watercolor, drawing, etc). I then choose a project that will establish a baseline of skills and use of color and we work from there!

I have worked with students that have no artistic knowledge, those that are needing a form of expression as they process hardships in their lives, and of course artists that are looking to strengthen their skills and learn more.

When look for an art teacher, I would ask about their passions! Do they themselves create and what? Have they worked with students before? There IS a difference between an artist that shares, and an artist that teaches.

If you are looking to learn specific styles, techniques and mediums while delving into art history and job skills... I am your gal! I practice what I preach, and I have the knowledge on how to run a class so it best suits the needs of the student.

As a public school teacher I organized district wide art shows- exhibiting work from over 40 school, students of all ages. I also earned a grant from the Dodge foundation and worked with the NJSymphony creating curriculum that combines art and music. More recently I am very proud of the art community I am building here at my art studio. Further proving that the arts are imperative to a young minds growth and an adults zen.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student should have an idea of what they would like to work on, in the broad sense. Drawing? painting? Then contemplate if they are open to direction and assistance. Remember that art is a skill, just like carpentry, math or even swimming. You get better with practice. When learning... take into account the person teaching you has acquired those skills and the ability to teach them.

My private lessons are $65-75 for 1 hour, single lesson.

Lessons can also be purchased in sets of 4 or 6 (meeting weekly). Prices vary depending on age/grade and adults.
