About Carrie

Hello! My name is Carrie and I am a soon-to-be-alum from SUNY Brockport, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. I have focuses in modern dance (release technique, Laban-Barteniuf, somatic movement, improvisation...), ballet technique, dance fitness and nutrition, injury prevention, choreography, as well as commercial dance such as tap and jazz. I enjoy teaching all ages and having fun in class while maintaining the integrity of strong technique.

I began as an assistant teacher when I was 12 years old at Dance Connection in Rochester (I am now 21 years old). I grew up dancing at Dance Connection, where my love of dance blossomed instantly. After graduating from high school in 2017 I began teaching guest classes in the summers at Dance Connection. I love teaching because it gives me the opportunity to set good examples and make a difference in people's lives.

I graduate from SUNY Brockport in June of 2021 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. This degree is a four year program requiring for 85 departmental credits to be completed.

Classes include all levels of Modern, all levels of Ballet, all levels of choreography and improvisation, music for dance (I took African Drumming), dance kinesiology, anatomy and physiology, dance history, and more.

I also took general education coureses in african american studies, women's mediterranean studies, psychology, and figure drawing (among others)

About the lesson

Typically when working with a new student I like to chat with them to get an understanding of who they are and what their goals in dance might be.

After these preliminary conversations I will start with simple movements and combinations to get an understanding of my student as a mover.

From there, I gradually add challenges to our work together each time we meet. I believe every student should be challenged regardless of level, but students shoud also be given material they have mastered. This increases students' drive to make improvements while simultaneously increasing self-confidence and independence.

I have worked with children and teens of all ages and walks of life. I have worked with children with special needs as well as those with physical disabilities. I am also a proud ally and rights activist and these values translate to the studio and my every day life.

My advice would be don't be afraid to be different! Our differences are what make us stand out. You don't have to do 100 pirouettes or be able to jump the highest to be an amazing artist and dancer. Dance is something meant to be enjoyed!
