About Sarah

As the student begins to advance in the individual concepts of the specific genre studied, we allow sufficient time to create self-discipline, confidence, and to help foster their passion for dance. We strive to challenge our students both mentally and physically in order to impart the necessary elements for becoming a professional dancer, supporter of the art form, or simply a confident individual.

Our positive atmosphere is a safe haven in which our students can learn the art of dance and develop a fundamental understanding of the form that will allow them to continue to thrive in dance throughout their lives.

At the Erie Dance Conservatory we are dedicated to nurturing the student’s development into a dancer through a positive and progressive curriculum. We gradually teach our students to explore the correlation between their bodies and proper dance technique, placement, and coordination – the natural navigation of the body. Erie Dance Conservatory offers individuals of all ages the most professional dance training available.

I was an injured dancer, that had to take time off to heal. While I was healing I was asked to teach in the school, and I realized that I loved sharing the world of dance with every student, so I decided to pursue teaching the art of dance rather than pursuing a dance career.

With over 23 years experience, the School Director, Sarah Purvis received her early training from the Erie Civic Ballet School under the direction of Arlene Ashton Hay, Robert Steele, and Sharon Filone. As a dancer, she performed with the Lake Erie Ballet Company in Classical Symphony, Concerto Barocco, Coppélia, Giselle , Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker. Her choreographic projects include Untitled Baroque, How the Grinch Stole Christmas,It’s Still Rockin’ Roll To Me, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Pan, The Sleeping Beauty, The Wizard of Oz, Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Cinderella, and The Nutcracker. Sarah’s teaching/rehearsal experiences include the Lake Erie Ballet School (9 years), Villa Maria Academy’s Dance Department (16 years), Salt & Pepper Mine Company (1 year) Lakettes Gymnastic Academy (6 years), New Castle Regional Ballet (3 years), and Erie Dance Conservatory, now in its 14th season. In 1994, Ms. Purvis was the only former student chosen to teach at the Lake Erie Ballet School while completing her degree from Mercyhurst College in 2002. Sarah is currently the Artistic Director of the Erie Contemporary Ballet Theatre. Ms. Purvis has held the positions of President-Elect, President, and Past-President of the Erie Dance Consortium, the 2009, 2011, and 2013 Co-Chair of the Erie Festival of Dance, held the position of Treasurer and Vice-President of and is currently the President of prestigious Regional Dance America/Northeast, a national organization of dancers, teachers, and choreographers

About the lesson

Classes at EDC include ballet technique, variations, pointe, modern, tap, jazz, hip-hop, acro, adult and pre-school. Each level has a syllabus that a student must master before moving to the next level. Each student is evaluated on a regular basis to ensure proper placement. Changes in a student’s class placement are made based on the recommendations of EDC Director and Faculty. Placement and advancement from one level to the next is based on the student’s accomplishments and ability, not simply on age or the number of years spent in study.

Ages 3 through adult.

Ask to observe the teacher's class that you or your child would be taking, but also ask to see the teacher's highest level of dancers. That will give you an indication of the teacher's final product. Also, look at the dancer's attire, studio flooring, and professional faculty.

Recently, EDC performed "The Wizard of Oz." We are currently getting ready to perform in Erie Contemporary Ballet Theatre's "The Nutcracker."

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It is very important for students to know what is expected of them from their instructors such as how many times per week the are classes, what attire and proper shoes should be worn, where should they purchase that attire, etc.
