About Kathy

My goal is to help students succeed in chemistry. Chemistry is challenging and students may be either anxious about starting or panicking after a poor exam score. I try to help them understand how to study chemistry so it will make sense and they can earn their best grade.

I have a patient, calm approach which helps students refocus and perform their best. I've been teaching chemistry for over 20 years and have learned different ways to approach and teach topics to increase a students chance of success.

I was doing research at the Salk Institute and had an opportunity to teach a class at UCSD. I enjoyed the chance to share my passion for a topic and interacting with the students. More recently I have been working with Community College students as I prefer the smaller class sizes.

I've been a college chemistry instructor for over 20 years. One of the best parts of my job has always been office hours, when students come by to go over questions and get feedback. Working as a tutor allows me to focus on the one-on-one interactions that I find the most rewarding.

About the lesson

I try to listen to where they are and where they are having challenges. When working with a new topic, I ask what they know and then try to build from there. I find students know more than they think but lack the confidence to use it and may also have some misconceptions about what they think they know. I try to then start where they are and work from there to increase their understanding and ability to succeed.

Most of my students are college students. Some of them are high school students in college classes.

Find someone who will listen to you. It's important that you have a good match, and that may not be the first person who you go to. We all think differently and if the person is not clear on what you expect then you will continut to struggle.

I went camping and hiking in the mountains here in San Diego in the beginning of August. I really enjoyed waking up in the mountains with a view of the trees.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When I'm teaching chemistry, I always tell students it's not just about getting the right answer. You can get the right answer and not understand the questions. So, students should ask questions about what they don't understand, not just "is this right?".
