About Amanda
Have you ever sat in class and just looked at the board not grasping anything no matter how hard you try? Or maybe you take great notes in class, but when you get home to study you forget everything? I've been there! But guess what? I graduated valedictorian, scored a 5 on all my AP exams, won the Silver Key from Scholastic, and became a first generation college student. I love tutoring because I believe in every student that I work with. Whatever you aspire to do, I want to help you succeed regardless of the obstacles in your path. Helping people lights a fire inside me, and I love to work with you rather than believing I know what is best. You matter to me and so do your goals. Watching students transform from insecure, frustrated, or unmotivated to brilliant students who advocate for themselves in class is so fulfilling. Working with me is different because I adapt to you! I understand that class time is focused on the group rather than any single individual, but with me, you have all my support, attention, and expertise and I am o excited to help you!
I enjoy being a tutor because I was once the student who sat in the back of the class feeling as though everything was in one ear and out the other. Nothing stuck! It was only through working with mentors that I learned how to make my education work for me, and it changed my life. It is my passion to help students feel empowered to keep reaching for their goals, change the negative narative they have about education, and learn to be proactive. I have helped AP students feel prepared for their tests, revised essays and lab reports for higher grades, and assisted with homework problems. It is great to watch a student rise from a D to a C or B letter grade, but it's even better to watch them find hope that their goals can be achieved. We all start somewhere and I have zero judgement for wherever you are at. If you're ready to grow, I'm ready and able to help you!
I started tutoring for my high school as part of my National Honors Society service, so I was trained by my teachers how to tutor, teach, and what makes a good tutor (... not just giving you the answers!). I also became a peer mediator so I know how to approach adversity and work with people, not against them. As for my education, I took AP Psychology, History (American and World), Biology, Chemistry, and Calculus AB in high school and completed much more science work in college. I am working towards my degree in Biology at the moment and have one semester left! I also did a bit of freelance writing and publishing through Scholastic.

When a students contacts me I want to know what their goal is. Do you need homeowrk help, test corrections, study tips, practice questions, or something else? Do you want to tackle a specific lesson or boost your overall grade? This can be communicated via email or a phone call. If it's specific homework or class activities, I prefer a picture or description so I can prep some kind of lesson plan. After that, we can decide where to meet, how long, and how many sessions, but this can change each time! I get to know how you learn, what hasn't worked, and start to work through the problem. Each session usually ends with me asking what you liked, what you learned, and what you would change.
I have worked with studets of all abilities in middle and high school. This includes high level AP students mostly for biology and English, the average student who just needs some support in nearly any subject, and those with learning disabilities who need study strategies tailored to their learning style in order to progress as they hope to!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you think you might need some help from a tutor or teacher, you should consider the following:
What exactly is hard for me? The material, the teaching style, my motivation, etc?
What is it that I need? What do I not need?
What has stopped me from reaching out before? What can I gain from reaching out now?
