After some introductions to get to know eachother better, I'll try to start by getting a good sense of what the student's goals are, not only for this lesson, but with the subject material generally. Then, it's important to me that I have a clear understanding of the student's immediate need. I'll ask some questions to make sure that I understand what the problem at hand is, and what sort of knowledge the student already has in order to address that.
The initial few lessons is a great time for me to observe and learn the style of my students. This allows me to more effectively cater my own teaching approach to that individual student.
