About Nichia
Science has been my passion for as long as I have memory. My mother says that as a toddler I would spend hours lining up tiny toy animals on my bedroom floor, which then evolved to catching real lizards and snakes when I got a little older (my mom found that phase slightly less charming). I thrived in summer science camps, loved all of my high school science classes, and finally made my way off to college to pursue a zoology degree. It was during graduate school that the education department at a local zoo asked if I could teach a couple of their summer school classes. I had never considered teaching before, but it was this experience that got me hooked! Here I found the perfect combination of two things that I love: science and youth. After that summer, I changed my path from becoming a biologist to becoming a science teacher, and I have never regretted it.
I am now a highly experienced science teacher with expertise in both domestic and international student populations. No matter if the students are ELL or native English speakers, high or low income, urban or rural, I cultivate a safe and supportive classroom atmosphere for all students. In my classes, I ensure that they are comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and exploring topics in new and creative ways. I am trained in a wide variety of data-analysis and differentiation strategies, which I fully utilize in the classroom in order to deliver the best instruction to EACH and EVERY student. I love teaching to a diverse audience (science is great for everyone!), and my experience encompasses the full spectrum of both age (K-12) and background.
