About Nathan

I taught an Ecology lab in Graduate School

I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Biology. Durring Graduate school (2 years), I was responsible for teaching an ecology lab to undergraduate students.

About the lesson

My initial session is used to determine what materials the student is learning, and among those what there strengths and weaknesses with the materials are. From there it is a matter of reviewing the materials they are struggling with in depth, and lightly reviewing the materials they have no trouble with. Between each session, I require the student to come up with questions that they have about the material. These questions need to be indepth. As the student becomes more profecient with the material, I will have them occasionally have them review previous materials by giving me a brief overview of those previous materials, to make sure they have retained the informaiton

Mainly undergraduate students, though I have tutored some highschool students

The best method I have found to understanding concepts is to reimagine them as a subject matter you enjoy. I can relate different fieelds of biology to each other, as well as explaining biological concepts in terms of sports. A lot of times it is easier to understand a concept if you are able to tranpose it onto an idea or concept that interest you

Birth of my daughter - My wife and I found out we were expecting while we were both in Graduate School. It was absolutely terrifying. However, the single greatest experience of my life was being able to hold my daughter for the first time and be able to raise her.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1) Not a question, but revelent: As soon as you feel lost or as if you do not understand something, you should reach out. It is better reach out earlier rather than later.

2) What is it about the concept that you are struggling to understand? Not just that none of this makes sense, but what specifically about it doesnt make sense?

3) Are you the only on struggling to understand the issue? It may be easier to reach out for extra help if you are not the only one needing help. It may also make you feel more comfortable asking for help if you are asking for help as a group rather than as an individual.

4) Have you made an active attempt to understand the material in the form of studying outside of the classroom? If you are only paying attention during the lesson and not studying outside of that, then you are not going to fully understand the material.
