About LeAundra

Biology is why I breathe! I went into college unsure of what I should major in. After my first introductory biology class, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I am fascinated by microscopic life forms and how they influence the entire planet!

I absolutely love to teach am very passionate about working with you where you're at. This means that I re-orient the way I teach and explain things according to your background and skill level. I love working with students and I have been a teaching assistant for four different college level biology courses over 6 years.

Education: I was awarded a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Utah and I have an M.S. degree in Marine Molecular Biology from University of Delaware. I am currently working on my Ph.D. in Ecology focused on microbiology / molecular biology in the soil.

What subjects I can teach: General biology, mirobiology, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, ecology.

I specialize in working with undergraduate students of any level. Most of my teaching experience has been for this student type. I would also love to teach highschool students in prep for graduation or college!

As a bonus, I love to help students get into grad school if that is of interest to you! I have assisted 5 students into placements in graduate programs to date.

I began tutoring math, english, and biology in highschool to elementary, middle school, and high school students. I realized during this time that I loved teaching! It's very rewarding to help another person tackle difficult intellectual problems. I love seeing others progress.

In the second year of my undergraduate degree at the University of Utah, I started my first TA-ship for Introduction to Biology. I continued teaching courses for the reminder of my undergraduate degree (Introduction to Biology Lab, Pathogenic Microbiology, Microbiology Lab).

In my M.S. and my Ph.D. I have also taught Life 102 (an introductory biology course) and Microbial Ecology (a graduate and professional level course in Marine Biology).

Education:

B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Utah

M.S. degree in Marine Molecular Biology from University of Delaware.

I am currently working on my Ph.D. in Ecology focused on microbiology / molecular biology in the soil. I will finish in two years.

Before I begin full tutoring sessions, I will have a preliminary greeting session to make sure the pairing is a good fit.

This will cover:

1) Student and tutor expectations and background.

2) Assessment of student learning style.

3) Tips and tricks for answering your biology questions on the internet if you get stuck.

4) A plan for how to tackle the course / semester.

I have been a teaching assistant for four college level courses over the past 6 years.

Two of the classes were introductory biology courses, so I was working with Freshman and Sophomores on basic biology fundamentals. The other two courses were upper division undergraduate courses in Microbiology. These students were planning to get a degree in Biology or another natural science and had a higher level of expertise in the field.

My best advice is to find a tutor with a degree at least one level above the level they are expected to tutor at. For example, a higschool biology tutor should have a bachelors degree. An undergraduate level tutor should have a graduate level degree.

I would also suggest finding a tutor who does an introductory "get to know you" meeting so that you can ensure you have a good fit! Working with someone who matches your working style is very important to success.

I just finished teaching a "Life 102" course for undergraduate students. The final day of class, students discussed "hot button" topics in Biology. Both the students and the teaching assistants set up a respectful atmosphere where everyone felt they could engage and learn from eachother. I was proud of our class for tackling difficult subjects with grace and respect!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1) What are your end goals? Are you in higschool exploring your interests? Is this class / course in a field you plant to continue in or do you need to take it for credit only?

2) What pre-requisite courses have you taken that prepared you for this class?

3) What expectations do you have of your tutor? What kind of learning styles have worked the best for you in the past?

4) Where do you feel like your current instructor is not fullfilling your needs?

5) How much time per week do you have to study and work on the material for this class?

6) What resources do you have to find information in the field outside of class and tutoring sessions?

7) How often do you expect to meet to ensure your success?

8) How can you best advocate for youself if you are confused or in need of more information? We can work on this communication style together!
