About Thomas

While I was a college student, I practiced taekwondo and there I met several high school students that needed help with math. I have several years experience tutoring individuals 1-on-1 in algebra and geometry, even having tutored some students from 8th grade to high school graduation. I have also tutored students in chemistry and biology. I was a tutor for the language department my senior year of college (I also graduated with a degree in Japanese). Last, in college I also worked at Kumon as a grader for elementary and middle school children. My job was to help address their errors on the homework. So I am totally comfortable with any age. It is easy for me to find educational resources depending on the individual's needs, and I can also work with whatever resources or materials the student brings to the session.

I am currently working as a researcher in the plant biotechnology industry. I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry & Biotechnology. My senior year I joined the school's first ever Science Olympiad and placed in the Protein Modeling category. I was alone in the competition but had so much support from my biology teachers, and ultimately that experience catalyzed my committment to study biology and find a career in the sciences. So, learning new science and math topics can be difficult. But from my experience in both high school and college I have found that the difficulty makes that Aha! moment so much more rewarding. From my experience of frequently visiting professors and supervisors for questions, I have learned that when you get stumped, it is important to take a step back and look at the essential concepts. We find the gap, build on it, and then come back to the new problem at hand. Building a strong foundation is all you need for attaining new knowledge. Sometimes it can also be hard to feel inspired by certain subjects that at first seem boring, uninteresting or irrelevant. Another goal of mine is to pull real world examples into learning sessions to help students find the relevance and meaning in what they are learning about. When intrigue is there, learning new concepts can be much more productive and exciting!
