About Melanie

I got onto the path of teaching from doing outreach events in astronomy and became friends with a family whose child was having difficulty in math. I could not help but lend myself to try and help, I am happy to report that I was successful!

Another student I knew for quite some time and she knew I was good in math which made me an easy go to when she needed help with college algebra. It was my delight to help and she aced the course!

I have a bachelors in space studies (aeronautics and astronomy), and I am pursuing my masters in general astronomy.

I have done math tutoring with several students (high-school and college) over the years since 2012 and helped to boost their grades from C's and D's to A's and B's.

Also I have taught various audiences basic science and advanced physics, from kindergarten to senior citizens and I love sharing knowledge with all.

About the lesson

Understanding the academic strengths and weaknesses of the student helps me to use the former to improve the latter. I am very patient and like to use analogies to help the student understand the concepts behind the information, I break down the complicated into tiny pieces.

It is important to me to improve the student's confidence with encouragement and helping them to see that they can overcome obstacles.

I have worked with high school and college students in everything from pre-algebra to basic trigonometry.

Look for someone who is patient and can offer diverse methods of teaching, that way the student is most likely to learn all that they need to succeed. A teacher with a positive attitude who can lift them up when stress from studying gets them down.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student should think about the concepts they are having difficulties with and write down as many questions as possible, so that they can organize their thoughts.

They need to think about what they need out of a tutor or teacher in terms of personality, do they need to be pushed or encouraged, proded or guided. Get someone who clicks with you so that the learning journey sticks and yields some extra confidence
