About Amy

I havae my M.Ed. in Special Education - Educational DIagnostics from Texas Tech University. Certfied in EC-6th grade Generalist, K-12 Special Education, and K-12 Educational Diagnostician. My day job is diagnosing students with learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism, dyslexia, dysgraphia, etc. and then helping come up with individualized education plans to assist them in their learning. I'm passionate about and trained to help kiddos who are struggling in the general classroom and need extra assistance and tutoring. I've tutored afterschool for 5 years and had nothing but positive feedback from my sudents and families.

My undergraduate degree is in music. I worked for many years for nonprofit arts, music, and theatre companies in town. The administration at my own boys school offered me a job saying if I ever decided to get cerfitied as a teacher they would hire me. I LOVED working with kiddos and had already been considered shifting careers, so I went back and got certified and the rest is history!

I've got a Masters of Education from Texas Tech University. I've taught in private and public school for many years. I'm certified in Early Childood-6th grade general education, Kindergarten - 12th grade special education, and Kindergarten - 12th grade educational diagnostics.

About the lesson

Generally I'll spend the first session or two assessing students and getting to know their needs. Oftentimes I contact teachers (with parent permission) to find out where the student is struggling in the curriculum and to gather extra work if available. Then during sessions we will work on homework, classwork, or extra work geared towards targeting student weaknesses and filling gaps.

I've worked with just about all levels and types: pre-K up through high schoolers, english language learners, students on the autism spectrum, students with learning disabilities, dyslexia, dysgraphia, intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbances, etc. I'm pretty comfortable with all ages, backgrounds, disabilities, etc.

Make sure you are comfortable with your tutor and that they teach in a way you understand. If they don't, move on and find someone else that you have good "chemistry" with. Having a teacher/tutor who can talk your lingo is incredibly important in your success.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think through what exactly they are needing help with and what their goals are with their tutoring. If you're unsure, be honest about that! If you are with a good tutor, they should be able to help you discover where your specific needs are, help you set goals, and then walk with you through a plan to achieve them.
