About Phillip

I've had experience tutorting students for over 5 years. I've worked at Kumon and with private clients. I can tutor students in basic and advanced mathematics, science (Biology, Physiology, Chemistry), and history and English. I've also taken the MCAT and can provide MCAT tutoring services.

I enjoy watching students who have had great difficulties in either understanding the concept or motivating themselves achieve success. I also enjoy working with younger kids or older kids. Their enthusiasm and personalities are great!

I started teaching young staff members and editors at my high school newspaper. I was the Editor-in-chief, and the position requires a large amount of communication and instruction skills. I learned much from it, and I decided I liked working with people. I signed up for a tutoring job at Kumon.

- High School Diploma, High Honors (3.98 GPA) from Walnut High School

- Tutored at Kumon: (English, Math: elementary to calculus level material), experience working with elementary to high school students

- 5 (max) score on AP Calc AB and BC, AP Bio, AP European History, 4 on AP Language and Composition

- 98% in college calculus class (MAT16B).

About the lesson

I offer homework tutoring services. This can be schoolwork, afterschool work, or outside work. I can tutor elementary to college students.

In the first session, I will generally diagnose a students' level by asking to see their homework, grades, and also having them do some homework problems in front of me. Parents are invited to sit in on the first session. The next sessions will be student-driven. Students should attend the session prepared with homework questions or theory questions. I will eagerly assist. I firmly believe in not showing the student the answer, and instead, explaining the principles behind questions so they can build off of it. I will supplement their weak areas with practice problems from their textbook or from online resources.

Besides instruction, I will also show students intuitive strategies to score higher on tests. For example, if a student does not know how to solve a problem, then I will show some logical steps one can take to deduce the answer (these are some of the strategies I used on the SAT).

Furthermore, I really want to get to know my student (e.g. hobbies, skills, how school is going) and work on establishing a good relationship with them.

I've worked with students from K-12. I've worked with students who have difficulty focusing, have little motivation in studying, but also students who are extremely motivated or talented.

I think as a student, you should be curious about learning. Sure, grades are important, but a curiosity to learn leads to higher grades. Fascinate yourself! Read books or articles and watch videos on things you are interested in! Get out there and do things you want to do to accomplish your dreams.

Sometimes, you may question the purpose of a course. However, just remember that the content of the course may not be as significant as the thinking it induces. Critical thinking is taught in every course. That's the tool you need for success.
