About Kevin

My experiences in the Navy, Nuclear world (both military and civilian), Hospitality and Food & Beverage industry sectors allows me to provide insight to better explain difficult concepts. Utilizing points of views from multiple experiences as well as my qualification as a Master Training Specialist (MTS) while at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, as a civilian Nuclear Engineering training instructor and Nuclear Instrumentation & Control Instructor, I am better able to link theories, concepts and formulae with real world situations to bring a different angle for understanding. Not all people learn the same, and as such, teachers, instructors and tutors should be flexible to their learning needs.

With over 20 years as a mentor, trainer, instructor, teacher, and tutor, I have a valuable skillset that should not be wasted.

I am excited to help other people, young and old, better understand the subjects in the areas of science, engineering and math. Seeing the light in a persons eyes brighten when they understand something is something you yearn for as a tutor. It always brings a smile to my face. When a person realizes they can learn anything, a whole new world is opened up for them. And then the world becomes a much better place for everyone.

Since joining the Navy Submarine Service, I have always been in a cycle of Learn, Teach, Learn, Teach, etc. It can be frustrating at times, but the rewards are priceless. Seeing or hearing about a person 3-4 years your junior making rank or advancing within their Command is the greatest feeling. In the Navy, we are always learning new skills, while perfecting our main skillset, and training the person who will replace us as we move to our next Duty Station. While at a Duty Station, we rotate through all the jobs of our Division, Department and for some the Command. My first shore duty was at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command as an Instructor. Teaching young people the basics of Nuclear Power prepares them for thier jobs out in the fleet. As chief Petty Officer, I was responsible for Reactor Control Division's training 1 year and 3 year plan as well as the execution ensuring it met all the regulatory requirements.

1. Identify what they and myself expect out of the tutoring session. Identify our goals.

2. Find out what my student wants to learn.

3. Find out why they want to learn about it.

4. Find out what they think is in it for them to learn it.

5. Find more in depth examples of why they should learn it.

6. Identify where they began to have trouble understanding it.

7. Formulate a plan to achieve our goal(s).

8. Evaluate progress as time goes by. Adjust the plan accordingly.

I have worked with students from as young as 8 years old, to recently graduated high school and college students, to people up to 62 years of age with twice as many years experience as me in the Nuclear Industry. It doesn't matter what age the person is, success is always infectious!

Ensure you truly know how you learn best. Letting your tutor know that will help the learning and teaching process.

Try to find a tutor who has similar interests with you, if you can. Having a common interest allows for a conduit of learning related to that interest. Something you both know that can possibly be a medium for information to learn the subject.

Recently, during the COVID-19 Pandemic, I had the pleasure of tutoring my son and daughter's little brother and little sisters (ages 7, 9 and 12 years old). I had to change my methods from teaching adults to little kids. It was a huge learning curve for me initially, but very enjoyable overall. It got my brain grinding again to think of new methods to peak their interest in subjects they thought was boring. I learned more than those little kids did for those 2 years!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do I need to learn this?

Why do I want to learn this?

What do you really want to do after all your classes are done?

Can you (the tutor) help me relate this subject to what I want to do (see above)?
