About Erica

As a tutor, I make it a point to understand what the student doesn't understand before I even get started looking at their homework or notes, that way, we both know what needs to be tackled. As I am tutoring, I make sure to check for mastery, ask if there is anything that is still 'foggy' to the student, and come up with acrostics or visual aides to help the student remember concepts. This includes working to understand the student’s concerns and what they feel like they are having difficulties comprehending and how much insecurity or anxiety plays a part.

I have been a tutor for several years and love it because I like to ensure that the student really connects with what they are learning in ways that make it easier for them to understand. Not only do I help students begin to master the material and improve their grades, but I also help them gain academic and personal confidence, problem solving and critical thinking skills, and a better sense of self.

The first time I started tutoring was helping a friend's little brother prepare for his math TAKS test. After a few years away from that, I found myself in an AmeriCorp program working at a charter school with kinder and pre-kinder students and then later, I ended up having many experiences working for other schools and companies before I ended up self-employed.

I am a former teacher's assistant, math lab instructor, and science teacher. I have worked for AmeriCorps and in both charter and public school environments here in Texas.

About the lesson

The first thing I do is ask the student what they feel like they need to work on and what they think they need to relearn, review, or learn fresh. I then find out their learning styles and preferences as we work through the material; when this happens, I am able to customize the sessions so that the student learns at an optimal rate. At the end of the session, I do a quick run down of what we learned and ask if there are any additional questions.

I work with students of all ages and grade levels and non-tradtitional students, but I have the most experience with high school level students and subjects and adult learners.

Look for someone who understands that the student needs to feel comfortable in their learning environment. Part of the reason students need tutoring is because they can't get comfortable with what they are learning for one reason or another.

I moved my website info to Wordpress. That is a completely different animal than drag-and-drop website templates. I think it turned out pretty nicely, though.
