About Andrew

When I left school I remember thinking to myself that the only job I would never do is be a teacher! Ohh how times changed! It is fair to say I didn't have the most positive experience at school and thus had no interest in going back professionally. However I had the opportunity to teach archery at an American summer camp and found the experience very rewarding. Soon after that I had applied for, then completed, a Post Graduate Certificate in Secondary Education course and took my first steps as a teacher. Over the following 12 years I've taken on roles as departmental leads in SEND, EAL and digital and AI use. I've spent years as a deputy housemaster at a boarding school. Out of this experience I developed a concept that guides my approach. At this concept's heart rests the relationship between motivation and success. Most people accept that, in general, you are good at what you enjoy, you generally have more resilience and a greater willingness to struggle for victory. Whereas if you don't enjoy something you are far more likely to give up. However what is so commonly overlooked is this process is a two-way street and often starts by success leading to motivation. Realising you've understood something or can now do something more than you could before, can be the difference which changes how a subject/topic is viewed. For example I took on a Y11 class that failed their Y10 Chemistry exams and, with this core principle guiding our sessions, they grew from disengaged students who disliked science, to motivated and engaged pupils who ended up securing their target grades. It was particularly satisfying for me as so many of them, at the end of the year, told me they had finally enjoyed Chemistry! So I will endeavour to make our sessions engaging, fun, and, possibly most importantly, successful!

I've always loved science and enjoy helping others understand it. Whether you're aiming for the tip-top grades or help with the basics I will tailor our sessions to your goals and strengths. With over a decade of teaching experience at some of the best schools in the UK I have detailed knowledge of the syllabus at both GCSE and A level, along with a degree in chemistry, A-levels in all 3 sciences and a PGCE. It has been my particular focus to approach the content in a positive and engaging way, using many different techniques from quizzes to videos to interactive simulations and more. I run sessions for an hour at a time. My experience, beyond my 12 years of teaching, includes taking on students at the beginning of year 11 who had scored single-figure marks at the end of year 10 and brought them through to a strong grade 5. At the other end of the scale I have helped the most able secure their A* and thus their place at university. Above all our tutor sessions will be about YOU, your goals, your ambitions, your strengths and your improvements. If you're looking for a positive learning experience guided by an experienced educator then I look forward to working with you.
