About Joely

Having achieved all 9s at GCSE and been predicted 4 A*s at A Level, I'm passionate in bringing out the best in myself and in the people around me! I received Best In School in UKMT Maths Challenges 4 times, qualifying for additional, more selective rounds. I also won a national Maths essay competition sponsored by EY, and have researched Maths books extensively. I'm also the Founder of Pioneer, an award-winning non-profit featured in The Guardian and BBC Radio aiming to empower more girls into Maths! We've reached 8 countries. I interview Maths undergraduates in articles, write my own advice blogs and run events with companies. I have also worked with the Maths charity MEI on videos and a national Maths competition. Keen to get you involved in any of these opportunities as well!

About the lesson

I always make sure my students come out of every lesson more confident, knowledgeable and independent. How? By tailoring the experience to the student's specific learning style and revising information in engaging, creative ways based on a scientifically-proven revision approach. I want to be not only a teacher but also a mentor, and so my inbox is always open to any questions or discussion outside of lessons.

Having discussed with the student what they are struggling most with and how they learn most effectively, I usually start by explaining the topic concepts so that students understand the exact context of the information. For me thoroughly understanding the material, and not just rote memorisation, is key for applying it to tougher exam questions. I define exactly what examiners will look for in this topic, work on questions with the student and relate it to real-life examples, keeping it interactive and memorable. I then incorporate harder exam board-specific questions so we can perfect their exam technique together.

A key part of my teaching is breaking down exam style questions into reliable steps unlike in textbooks. Having completed multiple past papers to the highest grade, I've developed methods which are so easy to remember that in the exam, it becomes second nature! I'm also extremely familiar with exactly what examiners are looking for in your working out e.g. layout, structure, notation.

Repetition is the key to memorisation, so I also have a fun way of incorporating multiple topics together in recap questions to guarantee long-term retention!

Typically, I teach 1 hour lessons but am flexible to do more (e.g. around exam time). I have previously taught 4 students ranging from Year 8 - Year 12; one student improved her grade from a C to an A*. I can teach from primary school up to and including A Level.

Especially as I've just finished sixth form, I better understand students' struggles and common error areas. I am also willing to share my updated and concise revision notes - so my students spend less time copying text word-for-word, and more time absorbing the information to put into practice - which is essential for exam success!
