About Andy

I'm a former professional engineer who worked across almost the whole of the energy sector - nuclear, coal, oil & gas - as well as with a range of other sectors. I subsequently worked in Management Consultancy and IT.

I've worked with people of many cultures throughout my career, and have been responsible for professional development and training of junior staff.

I'm recently retired. I have experimented previously with teaching. I found I hugely enjoyed working with motivated children of all ability levels, but disliked the grind of classroom teaching. I found huge satisfaction in seeing a pupil grasp a concept that they'd initially struggled with.

I genuinely love my subject - I don't think that there's any better platform for a developing mind than an understanding of how the universe works - which, at core is what physics is about!

About the lesson

I base my approach to teaching very much around the use of practical, real-world examples - I believe many pupils find it hard to engage with physics (and science in general) if it's taught in an abstract way. This includes the use of video clips and online simulations (for remote teaching).

I also believe that pupils (especially the more gifter ones) thrive on challenge. When classroom teaching it was my habit to end each lesson with a "Challenge Question" where I'd show some real-world process relating to the subject area covered and challenge the class to work out what was happening. Thise who came up with the best answer at the start of the next lesson would be rewarded.

I also make use of worked examples, working alongside pupils to become familiar with the methods necessary for examinations.

I'm flexible about lesson length; one hour would be my preferred length (not least because I prefer to teach fairly intensively, and this is as long as most pupils can probably sustain the necessary concentration.

I'm new to tutoring. I have previously taught (I was awarded a scholarship by the Intitute of Physics as an outstanding Trainee Teacher), but opted not to continue as I found the low expectations of pupils frustrating.

My qualifications are - BSc Nuclear Engineering (2i), MSC Mechanical Engineering, MBA.

I'm happy to teach Physics for all of GCSE, IB & A level and General Science to Key Stage3
