About James
I am an award-winning composer, arranger, orchestrator and music copyist. My credits include work with the Royal Opera House, Wigmore Hall, S4C, National Childrens' Orchestra, Orchestras for All, Wilderness Orchestra, Laura Mvula, Kate Nash, Joel Culpepper, Gabrieli Consort, Mannheimer Bläserphilharmonie and Sage Gateshead. I have received awards and industry recognition including the Eddie Harvey Award for Jazz Arranging and an Ivors Academy profile, and have been involved as an orchestrator and copyist in RPS Award and Ivor Novello-winning projects. I have a PGCert in Performance Education (with Distinction) from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, as well as an MMus in Jazz Performance (GSMD) and MA in Music (University of Cambridge). I have held a number of teaching posts in schools and music services within the UK and have also worked with national organisations including the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and Orchestras for All. I have also worked as a consultant and specialist in composition with schools including St Richard Reynolds Catholic College and Bedford School for Girls.

I teach music theory, arranging, composition and orchestration to students of a wide range of levels, from those doing GCSE/Scottish National Exams through A Levels/Higher and into Undergraduate, Masters and professional levels. Lessons most typically take place online (although in-person lessons are available in South or West Glasgow) and are extremely student-centred, tailored to the individual needs and interests of the student. I am professionally experienced in Classical, Jazz and Pop styles of writing, with a particular interest in composing/arranging for Big Band (or other Jazz ensemble) or orchestra, especially arranging non-Classical pieces for orchestral musicians. I can work with students writing by hand, on Sibelius, Dorico, Musescore or a range of other notation software packages, and teach the use of these. I also work with music technology and music production software such as Logic, Cubase and Ableton, including the use of professional-grade sample libraries from companies such as Spitfire Audio and Native Instruments, and can help students to produce high-quality audio versions of their work through music technology. Lessons are typically 45-60 minutes in length, depending on the needs of the student, but some more advanced students may prefer to do longer lessons.

Perfect! James completely understands where I am and where I'm trying to get to, and has broken the lesson into manageable chunks
Perfect! James has been an absolute delight to work with, he is extremely knowledgeable and is a very effective communicator. James has been working with me on my PhD compositions and hasn't missed a beat, drawing my attention to key details and broader conceptual points. I'd recommend James to anyone who wants to learn with someone who has a broad and deep understanding of music.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
James is an excellent tutor. He directed a community band I was part of and our improvement individually and as a whole band was tangible to the point that we achieved a two Gold awards at a national competition. He is patient, clear, organised and reliable. He is a highly knowledgeable and skilled jazz musician and is able to pass this along in an encouraging and inspiring style. He is also a very nice guy!
