About Robert
Hello!
I'm Robert and I am an experienced philosophy lecturer and tutor. I have a PhD in philosophy and a first-class honours degree in Arts with a double-major in philosophy and a minor in Classical Greek.
I have taught at two different universities in Australia: the University of Notre Dame Australia, and Macquarie University. All in all, I have taught philosophy full-time for over seven years and part-time for almost ten years.
I have taught large lectures to small seminars and tutorial groups and one on one teaching which is an area I excel in. My specialties are Critical Thinking and Argumentation, Philosophy of Religion, Free Will, Epistemology and Philosophy of Language

My approach is 'Socratic' - I teach by questioning. And this is not just quoting an ancient philosopher --- it really works!
Socrates likened himself to a midwife- a philosophical midwife to help people give birth to their ideas. The assumption behind this is that- you already know and understand, you just need someone to awaken you a little to find the answer in your head.
This method is gentle but powerful. I will not swamp you with information like a lecture but will pace our conversations where I know when to move on by what you say.
Fundamentally I love to help people think better since a good philosophy teacher does not tell you what to think, but how to think. And it rubs off.
Because of my emphasis on teaching rigour in reasoning, I can help non-philosophy students think better about their own disciplines; write powerful argumentative essays with clear expression.
One of my favourite quotes comes from the philosopher of language John Searle,"If you can't say it clearly enough, you really don't understand it."
I can help you both understand and write clearly at the same time because they are two sides of the same coin.

Excellent! I have already had 4 sessions with Robert, and I am quite satisfied on how things have gone so far. Robert has been quite helpful in providing me beforehand with material from his own lectures at the University, and good text references to prepare for our discussions. He is quite patient, and able to handle any kind of questions that arise during the lessons. His explanations are all quite well thought and grounded, and he is very good at engaging the student into thinking, which, in the end, is what I think it is most important in philosophy ;-)
His Socratic approach is just what I needed....it has helped me quite often to view issues from different angles, and reconsider some of my original views.
I highly recommend him!- Baltasar is a super intelligent and very friendly student. We have great discussion in his area of physics. Highly recommended and I look forward to our tutorials very much.Robert's response :

I was a student of Robert's at The University of Notre Dame for close to four years. He is a creative and critical thinker, who as a teacher inspires you to develop these qualities in yourself. Robert has a unique ability to identify nuances in complex problems and to communicate these nuances to a student in a way that is clear and results in the strengthening of their own dialectic skills! His classes are always interesting and overall Robert is a compassionate and knowledgeable teacher.
Robert was my teacher at the University of Notre Dame Australia for close to three years. He is a very enthusiastic teacher who has extensive knowledge in the philosophy of religion, free will, epistemology and logic. His classes in these areas were thoroughly enjoyable and challenging - encouraging the student to think and reason independently. I highly recommend Robert as a tutor to anyone pursuing study in philosophy.
I was first a student of Robert’s over five years ago. Since then I have been lucky enough to work along side him. He is always sensitive to the needs and ability of each student. He will encourage a student to be rigorous and creative while keeping the subject focused and entertaining. I could not recommend him enough.
