About Michael
My name is Michael Stack, I studied a BA Music at the University of Cape Town and completed my PGCE Music at Stellenbosch University. I have taught music theory for eight years with numerous learners achieving distinctions and many on the UNISA roll of honor. I am a firm believer in learners studying music theory early so they are properly prepared for subject music and BMus entry requirements. I have high expectations for myself and my learners. In the course of my career I have developed experience working with neurodivergent learners and have a keen interest in helping learners reach their potential in music.

English
I take a class subject approach to music theory, where the curriculum is structured and taught in preparation for a music theory exam. Weekly homework is a given, and once the syllabus is taught, it is followed by an intensive exam paper preparation program. I am fluent in English and have developed a grasp of Afrikaans in musiek while teaching music theory in dual medium classrooms, using bilingual teaching resources. I offer lessons from grade 1 to 5 UNISA, as well as grade 6 ABRSM and can teach both primary school and high school learners.
First lesson is a free comprehensive music theory assessment.

Mr. Stack has been an amazing theory teacher and has never "bailed" on me. Although he gives "stacks" of homework the results are worth it every time.
His ability with changing his teaching methods to match each student is phenomenal! I would 101% recommend him to anyone out there!
I was his student at Frank Pietersen Music Centre for 3 years, (Grade 2 - 4) and then came back to him for my Grade 6 and I really don't know how to thank him enough for all the work he put into each and every lesson for me.I highly recommend Mr. Michael Stack as a theory tutor for any grade. I've had the privilege of taking theory classes with him for 3 years, and can attest to his exceptional skills and dedication.
Mr Michael has consistently demonstrated his commitment to his students, and his contributions have significantly impacted the success of my theory. My theory classmates and I, have been able to achieve high distinctions and positions in the roll of honour with his help and guidance and continuous support.
Michael has taken me from Grade 3 UNISA theory all the way through to Grade 8 ABRSM. With a remarkably efficient approach, Michael's pedagogy is built on a foundation of intuition and thorough preparation. Having secured a merit in my Grade 8 theory exam, Michael's tried-and-tested methodology proved itself once more. Michael's lessons consist of a combination of aided spaced repetition (I did not even need to revise my musical terminology for my final exam, as they had been drilled into my long-term memory), thorough introduction of new material and perpetual improvement through the revision of the previous week's activities. This simple recipe, combined with the use of time-efficient and relevant resources, ensures success. Not only did it work for me as I moved on to one-on-one lessons for more advanced content, but it also delivered an entire Grade 5 class where every student acheived a merit or higher. I would strongly recommend Michael to anyone interested in studying music theory - he will identify exactly what you require as an individual and consequently work towards helping you actualise your personal best.
Michael Stack is an exceptional music theory teacher who made a significant impact on my high school experience. He's passionate, dedicated, and explains things in a way that's easy to understand. I achieved distinctions in his class and felt well-prepared for university because of his teaching.
He's thorough, patient, and genuinely cares about his students' success. His enthusiasm is contagious, and he makes music theory enjoyable and engaging. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their music skills and knowledge.
He's one of those teachers who not only teaches you the subject, but also inspires you to do your best. From the very first lesson, my music theory teacher made me feel comfortable, supported, and confident in my learning. He has an incredible ability to adapt each lesson to suit the learner’s individual skills and pace, making music theory feel far more accessible and less intimidating. He is friendly, patient, and highly knowledgeable, and he always encourages questions, no matter how small. Nothing ever feels like too much effort for him, and he genuinely wants his students to understand. Even though English is not his first language and I am an Afrikaans learner, he takes the time to explain and translate music theory concepts into Afrikaans for me, which I found incredibly helpful. Overall, he is a wonderful teacher, especially for learners who may struggle in a traditional classroom setting and prefer one-on-one guidance, and I would happily recommend him to any learner.
