About Mitchell

Mathematics is often seen as an intimidating subject, with many students believing they simply "aren't good at maths." Throughout my teaching career, I've found immense satisfaction in helping students overcome these self-limiting beliefs. As a mathematics graduate from the University of Bristol with a PGCE from King's College London, I bring both deep subject knowledge and professional teaching expertise to every lesson.

My passion for teaching mathematics stems from my own educational journey. During my time at St Mary's Catholic High School, I was fortunate to have a few brilliant mathematics teachers who not only taught the subject brilliantly but also showed me how powerful good teaching can be. Their ability to break down complex concepts, provide clear explanations, and build student confidence had a profound impact on my academic success, leading me to achieve top grades in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics A-Levels. These experiences shaped my decision to become a teacher and influence my teaching style today.

What truly drives me as an educator is witnessing the transformation in students as they develop their mathematical understanding. There's a special moment when a student who previously struggled with mathematics suddenly makes connections and realizes they are capable of mastering complex concepts. This journey from uncertainty to confidence is what makes teaching mathematics so rewarding, and it's a privilege to pass on the same kind of supportive, encouraging teaching that benefited me as a student.

My teaching methodology centers on building deep mathematical understanding through visualization and active learning. Rather than simply showing how to solve problems, I help students construct their own understanding by using carefully chosen diagrams, visual aids, and hands-on activities. This approach helps make abstract concepts concrete and memorable.

Each lesson typically runs for 60 minutes, which allows enough time to thoroughly explore topics while maintaining strong engagement. The first part of each lesson focuses on reviewing key concepts and addressing any questions from previous work. We then move on to new material, using a combination of explanation, worked examples, and guided practice. I always ensure we end with a clear summary and structured homework that reinforces the day's learning.

My qualifications include a Mathematics BSc from the University of Bristol and a PGCE from King's College London. I've taught mathematics at prestigious London schools including Tiffin and Latymer, giving me extensive experience with both the curriculum and common areas where students need extra support. This classroom experience, combined with years of one-to-one tutoring, has helped me develop effective strategies for explaining complex topics in accessible ways.

I specialize in teaching mathematics from Key Stage 3 through to A-Level, including Further Mathematics and preparation for advanced entrance exams like STEP. My students range from year 9 pupils building core mathematical foundations to year 13 students tackling complex Further Mathematics problems. A key part of my approach involves regular, personalized assessments that help identify specific areas needing attention. This allows me to tailor our lessons precisely to each student's needs.

For problem-solving, I emphasize developing systematic approaches rather than just finding answers. We explore different solving strategies, learn to break down complex problems into manageable steps, and practice the critical thinking skills needed to tackle unfamiliar questions. I encourage students to verbalize their thinking process, which helps develop mathematical reasoning and builds confidence in approaching new challenges.
