Every student is different, but learning is not accidental. My lessons are carefully planned around three principles: memory, problem-solving and questioning.
Memory. Lessons should not exist in isolation. Every new topic should connect to previous ones, reinforcing and consolidating learning. Self-contained lessons are easier to teach, but they are also easier to forget.
Problem-solving. Students learn to understand the question, identify what matters, organise information and decide on a plan before reaching for a method.
Questioning. Tutoring is an opportunity to develop the habit of questioning the problem itself. Good questions lead to good thinking, and good thinking leads to independence.
This may sound rigorous, but lessons are relaxed, patient and good-humoured. The aim is to build confidence, reduce anxiety and develop a student who increasingly needs the tutor less.
