About Charlotte
About Me
I'm Charlotte, a civil engineer with a PhD from the University of Bath, where my research looked at how we can build more sustainably using materials like stone, straw, and clay. Alongside my academic work, I co-lead a course on the Architecture Master's programme at Central Saint Martins in London, and I've recently taken up a research and teaching position at ETH Zürich.
Teaching is something I care about as much as the engineering itself. I believe the best way to really understand a subject is to get hands-on with it — testing an idea out, working through a real problem, and seeing where your instinct matches reality (and where it doesn't) before locking in the theory. I bring that same philosophy to tutoring: helping you build genuine understanding, not just get through the next deadline.

My Approach
My lessons are delivered online, with a focus on building real understanding of coursework and exam material — not just getting to the right answer, but understanding why it's right, so that understanding transfers to the next problem too. I use a question-first approach: rather than immediately explaining a concept, I'll ask what you already think is happening, then work backwards from there to find exactly where your understanding needs reinforcing. This tends to be far more efficient than re-explaining a whole topic from scratch.
For example, if a student is stuck on a structural mechanics problem, rather than simply walking through the solution, I'll ask what they expect the structure to do under that load before we calculate anything — then compare that instinct to the actual result. Where the two don't match, that gap is usually exactly where the real learning happens, and it tends to stick far better than being shown the method alone.
Sessions are run over video call with screen-sharing, working through past papers, coursework problems, or project write-ups together in real time.
Lesson Length
Lessons typically run for 60 minutes, though I'm happy to offer longer 90-minute sessions for exam preparation or coursework/project deadlines where more depth is needed.
