About Tom
I've been a journalist for 40 years, and I've covered every topic under the sun. I was an entertainment editor for 10 years and a columnist for 30. I started at a small paper in Nova Scotia but went on to write or work for major news orgs in Canada and the US. I also put the first newspaper in Canada on the web, the Halifax Daily News in 1993/4. I was a Nieman Journalist Fellow at Harvard University in 1991-92. I've written dramas and comedies for CBC-Radio's drama department in the 80s and 90s, news documentaries for CBC News and had a script filmed by the NFB. l love writing, and I love helping other people learn to be better writers.

Good writing is more difficult to find than hen's teeth in the 2020s. However, regardless of what you do, you need to write well to move ahead. My goal is to help you learn the basics of good writing and learn what sets it apart from the dreck we are forced to read every day.
