About Elizabeth

I am an experienced teacher and specialist 11+ tutor, with over 20 years' teaching experience and more than 15 years' experience providing individual tuition. I currently hold the position of Head of Department at an independent preparatory school, alongside a teaching role at a secondary school.

I hold a First-Class Honours degree from Durham University and a PGCE from the University of Cambridge. Having taught in both independent and state schools, I have a strong understanding of the academic expectations of selective schools and the skills pupils need to approach entrance examinations successfully.

I specialise in preparation for the Kent 11+, ISEB Pre-Test and independent school entrance examinations, supporting pupils across English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

My approach to tutoring I believe that successful tuition begins with understanding the individual child. Every pupil has different strengths, areas for development and ways of learning, and I take considerable care to tailor my teaching accordingly.

Many children approach entrance examinations feeling overwhelmed by unfamiliar question types, time pressures or the expectations placed upon them. My aim is to replace that uncertainty with understanding and confidence, helping pupils develop a clear, methodical approach rather than relying on guesswork.

As an experienced classroom teacher and Head of Department, I am accustomed to supporting a wide range of abilities, from pupils who need careful guidance and encouragement to those aiming for highly competitive school places. I bring the same academic rigour, patience and attention to detail to my individual tuition.

I place particular importance on creating a positive, supportive learning environment in which pupils feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and challenging themselves. I want pupils not only to achieve their examination goals, but also to develop greater confidence, independence and enjoyment in their learning.

Above all, I take pride in providing thoughtful, highly personalised tuition, combining high academic expectations with encouragement, clear communication and a genuine commitment to each pupil's progress.

About the lesson

I offer specialist, individually tailored tuition for the Kent 11+, ISEB Pre-Test and independent school entrance examinations.

Every lesson is carefully planned around the individual pupil, taking account of their current ability, strengths, areas for development and target examinations.

My approach is structured, methodical and encouraging. I break unfamiliar question types into clear, manageable steps, demonstrating effective techniques before guiding pupils towards applying them independently. Pupils learn not simply how to arrive at the correct answer, but how to approach unfamiliar questions logically, accurately and with confidence.

As pupils progress, we work on improving accuracy, speed and examination technique, including time management and strategies for tackling more challenging questions.

Following every session, I provide parents with a detailed, personalised Scheme of Work, outlining the topics covered, progress made, individual strengths and areas requiring further development.

Lessons are supported by carefully selected resources and targeted practice, ensuring that each session builds purposefully on previous learning. Where appropriate, homework is set to consolidate understanding and reinforce newly acquired skills.

Whether a pupil is beginning their entrance examination preparation, aiming for a highly competitive school place or seeking additional support in a particular area, my aim is to provide the structure, encouragement and individual attention needed to help them achieve their potential.

Elizabeth worked with her weekly starting approximately 3 months prior to the exams. I noticed weekly improvement with understanding of Latin and greater confidence in applying correct endings to words.
Elizabeth would send a detailed summary of the lesson and extra helpful resources or materials, some of which are still stuck to her bedroom wall.

In a recent test she scored as high as the top of the class. Her level improved greatly, but so did her confidence.

I highly recommend Elizabeth. Easy to communicate with, very responsive, flexible and effective.
