Let's face it, preparing for and taking exams is often an anxiety-provoking process, especially in another language! It's important to feel confident that you know what you're meant to be doing and are preparing in the most effective way.
Who am I?
I'm Jack, I'm a 36 year old fully-qualified English language/IELTS teacher and private tutor from the South of England with a general British accent. I offer practical support and effective, private tuition for students about to sit their IELTS exam. There are many different aspects to the IELTS test and focussing on individual skills can make a big difference to your score.
Some fun facts: I love cooking, freedom of speech, running, reading, sunshine and travelling. I'm not a fan of football, pineapple on pizza, or laziness.
How can I help you?
Below, you can find a breakdown of how I can assist you and the different skills you will develop.
Speaking Part 1: We would work on expanding your answers and enhancing your fluency skills by developing vocabulary, phrasal verbs, common collocations and expressions to describe basic information about you, your life, town, work/studies, family and plans for the future with lot's of informal language input.
Speaking Part 2: Speaking for up to two minutes can be daunting, but it needn't be as long as you know how to connect your ideas and flow from one point to the next, which I turn naturally lengthens your answer. We would develop your linking expressions, hedging and paraphrasing abilities as well as summarising skills.
Speaking Part 3: The trickiest of all three parts, developing ideas in a two-way discussion. You can expect to pick up tips on how to speculate objectively, express contrasting opinions, evaluate and explore ideas further.
Accent Reduction: As part of your exam preparation, you would also receive assistance with perfecting your pronunciation and making your accent sound more natural and authentic. We would do this by exploring the different nuances between your mother-tongue and English and focussing on the accurate pronunciation of the English sounds your have difficulty with.
Reading: Skimming and scanning are both skills which require both lots of training and discipline. We would compare the two techniques with plenty of practice to find a suitable style to help maximise your time during the exam. We would also look at summarising paragraphs, reading for detail and checking understanding (true/false/not given are usually the most problematic).
Listening: Again, a skill which should be actively practiced daily so we would use short clips of authentic English to help boost your gist and listening for detail skills. I usually use a variety of short podcasts and talks to hone students' listening skills. Finally, learn how to improve your note taking skills for listening (including short hand and focussing on content words).
Writing Task 1: Describing information - we would study how to write the perfect introduction using paraphrasing techniques, effective paragraphing and separating ideas, useful grammar for presenting data and comparing statistics/figures, and ways to better organise your main points.
Writing Task 2: Extended, discursive response - we would look at different ways of planning for different types of task 2 question, linking/contrasting expressions, more advanced grammatical structures (for example, inversion and cleft sentences), evaluating and concluding, avoiding repetition and organising your ideas effectively.
Exam Preparation Skills: Alongside specific skills needed to improve your IELTS score, we would also look at planning and managing your revision time, how to use mind maps and flashcards to aid your study, word building, and further practice.
How do I get started?
1. Send me an email with your name, home country, age, contact telephone number, location and specific skills you want to focus on, your previous/desired IELTS score. (it is also helpful to attach an example piece of writing for a task 2 question).
2. I will call you to ask you a few questions (this allows me to hear your level and how I think I can be of assistance). We can then arrange a place to meet for our first lesson.
3. We get learning!
Prices start from £40 per hour with the initial language assessment given for free approx 30 mins.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing from you and helping you on your way to a better IELTS score.
