About Valentina

I am a final year PhD student in History, with over 10 years of experience in tutoring. I am passionate about good quality teaching and a strong advocate for education. I enjoy sharing my subject knowledge and helping my students achieving their goal through rigorous work and emotional investment.

I have a BA, MA and MSc in History and related subjects (Philosophy, Religious Studies, Cultures) and I am currently completing my PhD in the History of Emotions. As a trained historian, I am able to see the bigger picture, putting pieces together, with the strongest eye for details. Usually, I am excellent in identifying and addressing problems, especially in regards to my students or my classroom environment. My students have described me as a ‘rigorous’ and ‘inspiring’ tutor.

I am Italian and I have been educated both in Italy (BA, MSc) and in the UK (MA, PhD). I have a wide, deep, solid knowledge of Humanities, particularly History, Cultural Studies and Religious Studies. I am fluent in English, Italian (mother tongue), Spanish (University level, DELE diploma) and French. I have also studied Ancient Greek and Latin.

Currently I am working as an Assistant Tutor at the University of Warwick, where I teach a module focused on Early Modern European History, which is my area of expertise. I have experience in planning and delivering lessons, marking assignments, monitoring students' progress, being aware of health and safety as well as pastoral issues related to my students. During the last two years I have also worked for a charity called 'The Brilliant Club', delivering academic style programmes in schools, to promote higher educations for young people with high potentiality but disadvantaged backgrounds. I regularly teach Italians to kids in my local area and, when still residing in Italy, I worked for several years as private tutor for private families, assisting kids aged 7 to 17.

About the lesson

I can teach a History lesson starting from the etymology of a word, quoting literary texts and primary sources, using several different historiographical approaches. On the contrary, I can teach Spanish and Italian not only focusing on linguistic functions or grammar, but also explaining the meaning and use of the language through the culture and history of Spain and Italy. I would say my teaching approach is Socratic and solidly interdisciplinary. Essentially, I am comfortable teaching any subject in the Humanities.
