About Raymond

I am a high school math tutor with 19 years of high school teaching experience. I have taught each of Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 for at least 10 years and I have taught Geometry for 18 years. I have worked with students in both regular public high schools and in alternative settings.

I bring real world math experience into my classroom. Before obtaining my teaching license, I was an actuary who worked in the development and financial management of insurance plans. I have also served as Treasure of the Board of Directors for 4 nonprofit organizations with over 15 years of treasurer experience.

I am a very energetic and hard working teacher. I love to learn myself and I love to share my knowledge. I am always looking to expand my teaching knowledge over the course of my teaching career, and I have gone above and beyond what was required of me to learn new teaching practices and skills.

I love exploring technology and incorporating technology tools into my teaching. My colleagues and students appreciate the new ideas I try to show them. I have spoken to other teachers in 12 conferences over my teaching career on ways to incorporate new technology into the math classroom.

I care about my students and I work very hard to learn what works for them. I promise that I will find something that works for students I tutor. I want my students to be successful and I do not consider myself successful unless my students are successful.

About the lesson

I tutor because I thrive teaching in one-to-one settings in which I can identify and create resources that can most effectively meet individual student needs. I am very resourceful and will explore many ideas to effectively help my students. I love being a part of that aha moment when my student finally understands a concept that he or she has been struggling with for so long but now makes sense.

My tutoring approach begins with learning to know my students to clearly identify my students' needs. I work to determine which teaching approaches have been most effective in the past and which have been the least effective. Next I identify resources that will be helpful. At this point I follow the Gradual Release of Responsibility model for teaching. This strategy is characterized by a sequence of learning activities that shift the responsibility from the teacher to the student. I start by identifying the specific student needs regarding a concept, utilizing or creating activities to strongly support students, and then removing the supports so that students can successfully work on the concept without me.
