About James
I have always held a great passion, interest, and reverence for life and living systems. As such, I studied and earned a degree in biology in college, where I was also a collegiate soccer player and an Academic All-American student-athlete.
Since graduating, I have been a high school biology instructor, AVID mentor, high school class advisor, STEM coordinator, and soccer coach committed simultaneously to genuinely connecting with students and enhancing their understanding and appreciation of life science at a high level. My lessons have reached students grades 9-12, and spanned traditional, honors, and AP biology courses with great success.
For twelve years in the classroom, students have consistently reported that my classes are engaging, interesting, and approachable. They say my enthusiasm is infectious and my care and compassion for them as individuals is refreshing. Plus, they usually appreciate my corny sense of humor along the way!

I incorporate different learning methods into all my lessons, customized to the needs and interests of specific students, usually in grades 9-12. Diagrams, animations, videos, and simulations make biology topics more accessible and real to students, and I use all of them to help illustrate key concepts.
A typical lesson plan might include an intriguing question to explore at the start, an emphasis on relevant vocabulary terms, visualizing concepts and processes using the resources mentioned above, connecting the lesson to real life and previous and/or future learning (biology is a highly interconnected subject after all!), then summarizing the learning in written or visual form.
Past students have also consistently complimented my enthusiasm, clarity, and ability to relate difficult subjects to their everyday existence. I establish respectful and fun relationships with all learners, care about the uniqueness of my students, and create a learning atmosphere open to all backgrounds and abilities.
