About Rob
I am a professional musician and teacher, with 8 years teaching experience, and over 10 years professional performing experience. I have a first class degree in Music from the University of Southampton (2014), specialising in performance and commercial composition. I have taught a huge range of students over the years, from as young as 6 all the way up to 70+, from absolute beginners who have never picked up an instrument in their life, to accomplished players who are looking to explore new directions. My performing experience has been equally varied, from tiny pubs where the band outnumbers the audience, to festival stages in front of thousands.

Thanks for taking the time to view my profile! I outline my general approach to teaching here but please do not hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss anything in more detail. My experience has taught me that no two students are alike. What works for one may not work for another; there is no one-size-fits-all method of teaching. For example, some of my students are fascinated in the theory behind music; to others this is of no interest whatsoever, and they are happy just to learn how to play their favourite songs. I value all students equally, and tailor their lessons to achieve their own personal goals, whatever these might be, while ensuring each student becomes a proficient musician along the way. It is important to open new doors for students by introducing them to music they were previously unfamiliar with, but having said this I will not push any of my students in a direction in which they do not wish to go. For those who want to take the traditional route of grades, I am happy to prepare them for these, and do have a 100% pass rate. But I will only ever actively encourage a student to take grades if I think it will aid their progress. Learning an instrument is a long (some would say endless) process. At times it will be difficult, frustrating and overwhelming. At times you will probably feel like giving up. But for those who stick with it, apply themselves and practise regularly, you will find it extremely rewarding, and will gain a skill which will be with you for the rest of your life! I teach either from my home in Kings Heath, online on Zoom or Skype, or at students’ houses. In some cases I will need to charge a small amount extra for travelling to students. I offer tuition for alto, tenor and soprano saxophones, clarinet, electric, acoustic and classical guitar, and mandolin. Please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss your tuition requirements.

Patient and reliable; lessons are enjoyable and appropriate to your level/ability. Would highly recommend!
Rob’s been teaching our son for over a year, and has never been anything more than professional, courteous, trustworthy, and has helped Sam with his playing, confidence and overall outlook at Music, we both couldn’t be happier to have Rob as Sams mentor & would encourage others to enlist him as a teacher, the difference it’s made to Sam is immeasurable wether it’s one-to-one or online he always comes away with increased confidence & knowledge.

I offer your first lesson for free. This is to offset most of the amount you will need to pay for Superprof’s Student Pass. This works out cheaper than most other similar sites, as this is just a one off payment, whereas others use an ongoing commission system. My rates are £38 for an hour, £22 for half an hour. 45 minute lessons can be arranged as well. I may need to charge a small amount extra for travelling to students in some cases. I can be fairly flexible with lesson bookings. If you cannot commit to the same time every week, this is fine, we will be able to work something out. I do however request that the full fee is paid for any lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.
