About Katie

I have been tutoring for approximately 7 years and have had a wide variety of students with different needs.

I'll be honest, I've lost track of the number of students I've had in this time. As an estimate, I would say that I have worked with approximately 80-120 different students. This is mostly due to the nature of short-term exam prep tuition (I have completed over 3 years of tuition with 6 of my current students).

My students' achievements vary. As I often say to parents, "I'll never promise an A grade, I will guarantee improvement".

Here is a snippet of some things my students have achieved over the years:

In a 5 month period, a student moved from a U grade to a C grade in GCSE maths.
Every student I worked with for KS2 SATs achieved the minimum standard of 100 this year.
A young (7-year-old) boy I worked with for a few weeks read for the first time during one of or sessions.
An 11-year-old went from getting 3/40 in maths tests to 36/40 in a 4 month period. He no longer dreaded school and his general anxiety levels reduced.

I could go on for hours about the things my students have done that have made me proud, or even made me smile, but how about we talk about you/ your child? What would you like them to achieve?

About the lesson

I started tutoring in 2012 and in 2015 I became a full-time private tutor.

I graduated with a First Class BA(Hons) English Literature from Edge Hill University in 2014 and have a full DBS, I am a current PGCE Secondary Mathematics student and am expecting to graduate this summer.

With younger students, I believe in fun and prioritise the engagement of the student in the subject matter above achieving incredible academic feats (I tend to find when they stop becoming the goal, they become the result). A typical lesson will begin with any concerns the parent/ student has, then we'll focus on a key topic and finally, we will (almost always) play a game for the end of the session.

Older students I like to put in charge of their learning. To begin with, I work with the student to identify weaknesses and areas for improvement to create a "rough guide", but I have learnt to remain flexible as in the time between lessons a student struggling to grasp basic trigonometry may improve so much that we're now tackling the Sine rule together.

NB: I only tutor Maths to GCSE/ Level 2, but English I can do in any capacity/ to any level.
