About Alexandra

I am an experienced and passionate Head of Biology and Examiner with a strong track record of helping students succeed at GCSE. I currently teach full-time and have several years of experience delivering high-quality lessons across a range of abilities, with a particular focus on GCSE Science (AQA and Edexcel). I hold a Master’s degree in Education and have held other leadership responsibilities such as Head of KS3 Science, giving me a deep understanding of curriculum design, progression, and effective teaching strategies.

I specialise in supporting Year 10 and 11 students to build confidence, master difficult topics, and achieve top grades. My teaching style is structured, supportive, and focused on exam success. I break down complex biological concepts into clear, manageable steps and adapt my explanations to suit each student’s learning style. I create a calm and focused environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, which is essential for building confidence and making consistent progress.

About the lesson

Each session is carefully structured to maximise learning. I begin with retrieval practice to reinforce prior knowledge, followed by clear and concise teaching of key concepts. We then apply this understanding through exam-style questions, with immediate feedback to help students improve their answers and technique. I place a strong emphasis on exam skills, including how to interpret questions, structure responses, and avoid common mistakes, as this is often the key to achieving higher grades.

I have strong subject knowledge across all key areas of A-level Biology, including cell biology, genetics, physiology, and ecology. I am highly familiar with the GCSE Science (AQA and Edexcel), and have a clear understanding of exam structure, assessment objectives, and mark schemes, aided by my experience of marking for AQA. This allows me to guide students effectively on how to maximise marks in exams.
