About Andie

Hello! I'm Andie, and I hold both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in English Literatures. Currently, I am working towards my PhD in Anglo-Irish Literature and am honoured to be a doctoral scholarship recipient, a published scholar, and a recognised specialist in my field.

Throughout my academic journey, I've consistently excelled since my A-levels, which have served as models for future learning. I also teach at a private school, where I support students preparing for 11+ and 13+ exams, and I also specialise in GCSE, A-Level, and university-level English. With over 500 lessons taught both in person and online, I have a proven track record of helping aspiring students improve their grades.

What differentiates me is my friendly and approachable nature; I strive to be understanding and kind, and I aim to make learning enjoyable. Through literature, we can explore the influence of history and culture on human experience. My passion for literature comes from its power to connect people across different times and places, promoting empathy and critical thinking.

I aspire to motivate my students not only to appreciate the beauty of language, but also to engage in deep textual analysis and foster meaningful discussions in the classroom. I provide a supportive and engaging learning environment where students feel confident to explore their thoughts and ideas.

By using a variety of teaching methods, I help students improve their analytical skills, fostering a love for literature that I hope will stay with them for a lifetime.

In my approach to teaching English Literature and Language, I prioritise a structured yet flexible lesson plan tailored to each student's needs. Initially, I assess students’ proficiency and identify their goals through discussions and diagnostic assessments.

Based on this, I design a curriculum incorporating essential literary concepts, critical analysis, and relevant texts. Each lesson will follow a clear structure: an engaging introduction to hook students, followed by an exploration of themes and contexts, and culminating in a reflective discussion or activity.

I incorporate various teaching methods, such as direct instruction, group discussions, and creative assignments, to cater to different learning styles. To prepare for each session, I curate literature and language selections, develop thought-provoking questions, and create interactive materials that foster engagement. I promote a supportive environment where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts.

To measure progress, I utilise formative assessments such as essays, presentations, and reflective journals. Regular feedback and one-on-one check-ins ensure that students stay on track and feel empowered. Encouraging learning is vital, so I emphasise the importance of curiosity and critical thinking.

By nurturing a love for literature and equipping students with analytical skills, I aim to inspire them to achieve their academic goals and develop a lifelong appreciation for the subject.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My engagement with English and the desire to share that passion through private tutoring stem from very deep roots. My educational journey began unconventionally early, being placed a year ahead at the age of four. This initial acceleration, coupled with our subsequent move to Canada, fostered a strong ambition to excel, particularly in English.

My home environment played a pivotal role; my mother, an accomplished author and lecturer, was immersed in her Master's degree studies during her pregnancy with me. This constant immersion in intellectual pursuits and literature from my earliest memories cultivated a profound and enduring fascination with language and literary study.

This passion naturally blossomed into a profound desire to help others navigate their own academic paths. I vividly recall the pressures of my own exam periods, and it instilled in me a deep commitment to be the kind of teacher I would have wanted by my side: someone who didn't just understand the material, but understood me. As a natural empath, I'm genuinely passionate about going beyond just teaching content.

My approach to private tutoring is therefore deeply rooted in forging genuine connections, meticulously understanding each student's unique learning style, their specific challenges, and even their anxieties. I thrive on demystifying complex concepts, building confidence, and empowering students not just to pass exams, but to truly embrace and enjoy their learning journey, just as I have.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

As an educator specialising in English Literature and Language, my expertise spans a broad range of academic stages. I prepare students for foundational entrance examinations at the 11+ and 13+ levels, guide them through the demands of GCSE and A-level curricula, and provide advanced support for university-level study. Within this comprehensive scope, I derive immense satisfaction from facilitating deep and probing discussions about poetry.

I am particularly drawn to exploring the rich ambiguities inherent within poetic lines, an aspect my students and I find profoundly captivating. We delve into the fascinating process of uncovering layers of meaning and nuance that can be revealed from even a single, carefully crafted phrase. My students and I find it fascinating how much can be uncovered from a single line.

One aspect of teaching I find less appealing is an overemphasis on rigid essay templates. Even though I recognise structure's importance for clear communication, my aim is to present it as a supportive framework that nurtures individual critical thinking and authentic student voices, rather than a restrictive guide.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have found a role model in the poet Louis MacNeice. His influence has been immense, but what resonates most with me is MacNeice's remarkable ability to navigate the space between established poetic traditions and bold innovation.

He fearlessly tackles a broad spectrum of themes, encompassing both intimate personal experiences and pressing political realities. Through his work, he has illuminated for me the very definition of a skilled writer, showing how to imbue even ordinary, non-traditional subjects with a compelling poetic sensibility, revealing the beauty and significance in the everyday.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

My personal experience, lacking the guidance of a tutor during my younger years, has led me to strongly believe in the transformative power of such mentorship. I would have immensely valued the presence of a tutor, as I'm confident it would have significantly accelerated my learning and understanding.

The qualities that, in my opinion, make an exceptional tutor are extensive. They require a foundation of patience to guide learners through difficulties, coupled with a robust education in their field. Beyond technical knowledge, they must be understanding and empathetic, able to connect with students on a personal level.

Kindness is vital for building trust, and a palpable passion for their subject is key to igniting curiosity. Furthermore, a tutor who is personable, relatable, and can artfully weave humour and fun into their teaching creates a dynamic and highly effective learning environment.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My high school English teacher offered a transformative piece of advice that changed how I approached essay writing, especially when I felt stuck. Instead of the unhelpful 'try harder', they said: ‘Your first draft doesn't have to be perfect. The real writing happens in the revision.’

This simple sentence was a revelation. It liberated me from the pressure of perfection, allowing me to simply get my ideas down, no matter how messy. The revision process then became an enjoyable puzzle of refinement and polishing, rather than a daunting task. This experience has taught me that striving for perfection is often futile, but embracing the learning process and aiming high can be incredibly rewarding.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

In the realm of English Literature, particularly with textual interpretation, there is an inherent subjectivity that precludes a single, definitive 'correct' reading. This lack of absolute consensus can present challenges when disseminating my own scholarly work, especially when encountering established critics and academics whose perspectives diverge significantly.

This often leads to rigorous debate and a dynamic exchange of ideas, which, while sometimes feeling like a battlefield, ultimately underscores the inherent richness and multifaceted nature of poetry. I believe it is crucial to embrace this plurality of interpretations, as it is precisely through these diverse viewpoints that the depth and complexity of literary works are fully appreciated.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My love for helping stems from a deep-seated desire to see others succeed and thrive. While I appreciate the broad spectrum of ways one can assist, my particular passion ignites when I can empower individuals through the acquisition of knowledge and actively nurture their personal and academic growth. It is in this space of learning and development that I find my greatest purpose and motivation.

I believe that by equipping students with the necessary skills, critical thinking abilities, and a solid understanding of their subject matter, I am providing them with the tools they need to confidently navigate the complexities of life and ultimately achieve their goals. This act of enablement, of fostering independence and capability, is immensely rewarding.

The fulfillment I derive from this endeavour is multifaceted. I find great satisfaction in the act of sharing what I have learned, distilling complex ideas into accessible concepts, and bridging gaps in understanding. However, the most profound joy comes from witnessing the transformation that unfolds. Seeing that spark of comprehension ignite, observing their confidence grow, and ultimately celebrating their achievements, especially on milestone days like results day, is incredibly moving.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Beyond demonstrating my ability to answer interview questions, what truly makes me a Superprof are two key elements: my proven academic excellence and genuine dedication to student success.

My academic journey, marked by a funded PhD in English and Irish Literature (following my BA Hons and MA), showcases my self-driven ambition and resilience. I recall a college careers advisor predicting I wouldn't get into my preferred university, but through sheer initiative and hard work, I not only gained admission but excelled, later earning a scholarship there. This personal experience deeply informs my teaching approach.

I've a strong track record of generating significant academic improvements for GCSE and A-Level students. For example, I've helped students jump from a grade 6 to a 9 in their exams within just two months, and dramatically improved English coursework from a D to an A in a single session.

My commitment extends to crafting a truly personalised learning experience. Each lesson, I dedicate over an hour to preparation, and I provide parents with detailed, multi-page progress reports. Ultimately, I'm deeply invested in my students' success; I celebrate their victories as my own and am passionate about building their confidence and helping them achieve their aspirations.
