About Vanessa A
I’ve been teaching long enough to know that the best teachers don’t just know their subject—they know how to reach people.
I’m a certified English educator with more than 20 years of teaching experience and a genuine love of language, literature, and writing. I hold a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in English Literature, and my experience spans middle school, high school, college, adult education, and ESL.
I’ve taught everything from reading and literature to freshman college composition, and I’ve worked with students who were confident writers as well as those who would rather do almost anything than write an essay!
What I bring to tutoring is experience without intimidation. I’m patient, encouraging, engaging, and very good at figuring out where a student is getting stuck. I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and even laughing a little along the way.
After all these years, one of my favorite moments is still seeing a student suddenly realize: “Oh! I get it!”
That never gets old.

English doesn’t have to feel complicated—and good writing definitely doesn’t have to be boring.
I’ve spent more than 20 years teaching students how to become stronger readers, clearer writers, and more confident thinkers. My approach is warm, energetic, practical, and personalized. I don’t simply correct your work and send you on your way—I help you understand why something works so you can eventually do it without me.
Struggling with an essay that just won’t come together? Let’s fix it. Reading something three times and still wondering what the author is talking about? We’ll break it down. Need stronger grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, academic writing, or conversational English? We’ll work on exactly what you need.
I’ve taught middle and high school students, college writers, and adult learners, so I know that one teaching style does not work for everyone. A typical lesson begins with your goal, identifies what’s getting in your way, and turns that challenge into manageable steps you can actually use.
My goal isn’t simply to help you finish today’s assignment. I want you to leave our lessons thinking, “Wait—I actually understand this now.”
