I speak with students to gather their current vocabulary level, and then build from that base point. We will work with both traditional methods (thesaurus) and newer methods (free thinking, word association, creative exercises) to expand students' vocabularies.
Vocabulary can be fun and fascinating, and mustn't be treated like rote mathematics exercises! Words have unique connotations, and can bring flavor and flair to otherwise dull writing.
I like to introduce students to "root words," with an emphasis on how words function in "families." Once students begin to recognize root words, often the meaning of an unknown word will become apparent; roots also help expand vocabulary by reminding students of similarly-constructed words.
With vocabulary-centric assignments, I begin by assessing the core of the assignment, then build on students' strengths while bolstering their weaknesses. I focus on the primary requirements of the assignment, and then work outwards (building the presentation/paper, composing the assignment, etc.), then work with proofreading and editing the final piece.
Ultimately, the best word may not be the biggest or most obscure word; working from a student's "comfort zone" will generally bring about the best results, and this principle holds true for vocabulary sets.

Ms. Spann was a college professor of mine for 2 separate courses. She managed to keep me interested in a college subject that I detested all through high school. She is one of the most understanding and accommodating people I have ever met in my life. She is an amazing person with a unique personality that firmly grasps the attention of her students. I am eternally grateful for the chance to be one of her students.
As her professor in various upper division college writing courses, I've observed Anna contribute to many intensive critique sessions. She always tactfully approached the assessment of the work of her peers with unusual insight and with generosity towards their work. She was able to articulate complex ideas with clarity and precision. Anna is one of the brightest students I've taught in a long career, and I'm certain of her abilities as a teacher and tutor. I recommend her without reservation. She's funny, smart, cool, kind and humble.
Anna is a brilliant, talented, inspiring wordsmith. Her wit and compassion make her an outstanding teacher, tutor, and friend. You won't be disappointed.
Creative, dedicated, and super smart! Anna and I have known each other for over fifteen years. We have been friends and classmates. She has also helped me edit a number of papers. I know Anna is a capable and trustworthy teacher; in addition to her skills in writing and grammar, she is a good listener, and creative enough to communicate ideas in ways that are easy to understand.
