About Tristan
Hello this site!
I am an experienced tutor based in Camberwell, South London, with a friendly, individualised approach to teaching. My mantra is to show students that there is more than one way to approach difficult problems in science and maths - it is an insight that empowers them to understand their subjects more comprehensively and become stronger learners.
With over 2000 hours of teaching experience over the past ten years, I have taught as a private tutor, in tutoring centres, and in a classroom setting as a teaching assistant. I have enjoyed working with students from a broad range of learning abilities - I often offer a conversational approach to understanding problems in maths and science, so as to get to know students and help them familiarise with their own thought processes. I have extensive experience helping with exam preparation, ranging from 11+ to A-Levels. Some schools that I have helped students apply to for 11+ and 13+ are Dulwich College, Kings College, and the Emmanuel School. My pro-active, discussion-based teaching style often helps students become all-around better learners, giving them the all-important 'double whammy' of content mastery and study skills growth.
An example!
Susie stares at a problem I pose to her involving two algebraic equations with two unknown variables... she's a bit baffled. Susie is uncomfortable with algebra but is a visual thinker - she has always done well with graphs at school and diagrams also come easy to her. I encourage Susie to look at the problem another way: re-arrange the two equations and graph them on a plot. Susie quickly finds that they intersect at a specific point and sees that this is a solution where these equations both hold true!
This here represents my preferred method of teaching: playing to the student's strength builds their confidence and allows them to compare thinking techniques they know to equivalent techniques they are not as strong with.
About me - I grew up in Boston, USA, and now live in South London some years after graduating from University College London. When I'm not teaching, you'll most likely find me on the tennis court or tinkering on the piano!
