About Jack

I am a London-based tutor of Politics with 8 years of experience, which runs alongside my creative profession as an actor, singer and writer.

As a 1-1 private tutor of Politics and then Drama & Singing, I have helped student gain confidence, maximise their potential and achieve their goals. Aims of students range from getting the best grades in exams and gaining entry to their 1st choice Russell Group Universities, to having a better understanding and enjoyment of the subject through bespoke tutoring.

Students I have previously tutored have ended up with top grades and gained entry to prestigious institutions including King's College London, University of Manchester, University of York & Newcastle University, to name a few.

Having studied Government and Politics at AS/A2 level and at Degree level at the University of Bristol, I then decided to follow my passion and gained a place at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music, graduating with a Master of Arts (Distinction) and being awarded a Diploma of the Royal Academy of Music.

At University I set up a production company, and as the director of theatrical productions in Bristol and Edinburgh I was responsible for both large and small companies of actors, as well as heading up a creative team and being responsible for an orchestra and backstage crew. Having said this, I always found the one-to-one sessions with actors most enjoyable and productive, and allowed me to utilize and develop the same skills I needed to become a great tutor.

I am now an actor and singer, alongside tutoring A-Level Government & Politics. I moved into tutoring to utilise both my interpersonal skills and passion for politics in 2018, and have continued to take on students every year.

I am highly experienced with both the AQA and Edexcel examination board courses for A-Level Politics, including their mandatory and optional units.

My approach to Politics tutoring is student-led, identifying the areas where focus is requested and needed, relating it back to the wider framework of the exam specification. I also try to create a relaxed environment where students can flourish and progress; in my lessons I aim for students to feel that they can put forward ideas and bring their own knowledge to discussions, ensuring the classes are always interesting and fun, whilst being challenging where necessary.

I always approach tutoring with an effort to relate the more 2D textbook-aspects of the subject to the real world. Politics is happening right now, all around us, and so much emphasis in the A-Level course is rightly placed on using 'Contemporary Knowledge' and examples in exam questions; I pride myself on making sure I'm up-to-date in terms of knowing the status of political institutions and issues that change at a rapid pace, whilst encouraging students to engage with politics outside of the classroom (via the news, social media, podcasts etc). Similarly, my approach is also question focused - I have found in my experience that vital time can be wasted or marks lost in exams because students aren't answering *exactly* the question being put to them. Refocusing attention to question dissection, essay planning and time management are all things I find very important to work on.

Lessons typically run 1hr-1.5hrs, depending on what the student requires, and are for the Edexcel/AQA A-Level course (age 16-18).

Having studied Government and Politics at AS/A2 level (A* Grade, alongside History and Maths, both A Grade) I then went on to the Degree course in Politics and International Relations at the University of Bristol, being awarded the SPAIS prize in my second year and graduating in my third with a high 2:1.

I moved into tutoring to utilise both my interpersonal skills and passion for politics in 2018, and have continued to take on students every year; students regularly achieve high grades and gain placement at their top choice universities, including King's College London, University of York, Lancaster University and Reading University.

Most importantly, I want my students to enjoy the subject as much as I do.
