About Toby
Hi, I’m Toby — a professional jazz double bassist and experienced teacher based in London.
I perform regularly across the UK and internationally, appearing at venues such as Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, the Jazz Café, and the Vortex, as well as leading European venues including BIMHUIS and TivoliVredenburg in the Netherlands. Alongside performing, I’ve been teaching for several years as a peripatetic music teacher with Hackney, Haringey, Camden, and Tower Hamlets music services.
I teach both double bass and bass guitar to students of all ages and abilities — from complete beginners to more advanced players. Whether you’re just starting out, preparing for exams, or looking to develop your improvisation and musicianship, I tailor lessons to suit your goals and interests.

My approach focuses on building strong fundamentals (technique, time, and sound) while keeping lessons engaging and musical. I’m passionate about helping students grow in confidence and enjoy making music, whether that’s through jazz, pop, or contemporary styles. I am a DBS checked peripatetic teacher with 3 years of school teaching experience, and I cater to all ages and abilities. Lessons range from 45 minutes to two hours.

Toby is a supportive and inspiring music teacher. He has experience supporting students from a variety of ages and musical backgrounds. I appreciate his blend of expert knowledge and experience of his instrument alongside his reliability and ability to inspire his students to reach their full potential.
Toby Yapp is an exceptional musician with a great feeling for music and how it can bring joy and fulfilment to everybody. I am a musician and Toby has found ways to help me see and understand music in a different way. He has a deep understanding of theory and technique, vital for grades, progressing as a musician and working in the professional space but he also has a great passion for music-making, playing with other people most importantly, enjoying music! Toby is a great teacher and I fully recommend him.
