I’m an experienced crochet teacher & published crochet designer. I’ve been teaching at my local arts centre in Walton-on-Thames for 11+ years. For me, crochet is not a hobby but my profession.

About Merrian
I have a background in Art & Design - I studied in Falmouth & have a degree in Graphic Design.
I have worked as a costume jewellery designer for the V&A, Historic Royal Palaces & the Natural History Museum.
I’ve also been an e-commerce manager but now work full time as a crochet teacher and designer.
Teaching & sharing my passion for crochet is what truly makes me happy.
I’m also an advocate for natural fibres and the slow fashion movement…through teaching crochet I build awareness and appreciation for those that make our clothes.
Crocheting (teaching & design) is now my profession and it's how I earn my living.

Complete Beginners - Learn to Crochet
For complete beginners I only teach in person. I have taught crochet for 10+ years and it’s really important that I can clearly see what the student is doing in terms of forming stitches and how the yarn is being held to avoid possible strain injuries and accidentally picking up habits that can result in forming stitches incorrectly.
A typical beginner's class will consist of mastering the basics of holding the yarn and thread and making the most common stitches.
I provide my own, exclusive, photo tutorials and access to videos covering all the techniques from the class.
I recommend a minimum of 3x 1.5 hour sessions, a week apart to help establish muscle memory, I therefore don't offer single lessons for beginners.
A kit is available for purchase separately.
I also run lovely group sessions in Walton at the Riverhouse Barn and at Farnham Maltings.
Improvers & More Advanced Crocheters
Online & in person, I can offer help with:
- pattern reading.
- design.
- reading charts.
- modifying patterns for fit.
- joining techniques for motifs.
I am experienced in tapestry crochet, Tunisian crochet, thread crochet & slip stitch (Bosnian) crochet. I specialize in making Sweaters with crochet motifs such as Granny Squares.
My online classes can also include exclusive video content, depending on what’s required.

Details
In order to qualify for the free session you must book a minimum of 2 sessions.
This is because I earn 100% of my living from teaching crochet, as you can imagine, this is not the easiest task. I have very limited time and it's not financially feasible for me to have a string of students that only book 1 free session.
For complete beginners, I recommend a minimum of 2 sessions, ideally 4, a week apart.
Crochet starter kits are £15.
